Hello, everyone. I've been a lurker here for a few weeks, reading about various knives and the communities opinions on them. Today, however, I decided to register. Maybe the beer made me more social?

Anyway, I very recently just started collecting knives. As in within the last couple weeks. I've been searching for a hobby that spoke to me and I was able to find one. Although, I suppose it's something I should have realized sooner. I don't know how many can relate, but I was always that kid that when we went camping or to a carnival would sneak off to the knife shop and spend my allowance on some cheap knife I found, then promptly hid it from my Mom to ensure it stayed in my possession. Something always just resonated there. I found knives to be "cool" and "dangerous" but at the same time they had a very majestic way about them. A fundamental use that just by a glance would spark thoughts of "Oh man, the things i could do with that!". Nothing bad of course. Mostly, throw it, carve with it, save the world with its "mystical powers". The usual stuff.

Two weeks ago we went camping, right before we left I was told that we couldn't bring out Quads, since the specific site we were going to didn't allow off-road vehicles. I was pretty bummed out and when we got up there we decided to stop at a Mom&Pop shop for some supplies. While I was in there I noticed they had a very small knife collection for sale. Nothing special, but it reminded me of what I used to do when I went camping as a child. So I decided to pick up a blade. The one that caught my eye and lit that little spark inside of me was oddly enough not a particularly great knife. It was a Gerber Remix. I decided to grab it so I could mess around and make some marshmallow sticks and what not. Ergonomically, an amazingly comfortable knife. It just felt really good in my hands, which are rather large. However, by the end of the trip the blade itself was already showing a little wear. Nothing too serious, since even as a kid I didn't believe in knife abuse, but noticeable to me who had gotten it 5 days earlier at the start of the trip. Of course, it's the type of knife that I wouldn't consider a solid camping knife anyway. An excellent utility knife perhaps.

When I get home, I put the camping stuff back in the garage, when I notice a box of "junk" that I hadn't paid much attention to before. I open it up and I find the usual "why do we still have this?" stuff, but at the bottom was a knife in a thick leather sheath. I pull it out and take a look. Still in pretty decent shape, the knife actually belonged to my Mothers ex-husband. I could tell it was nothing spectacular, but I could also tell it was considerably well built.

The knife turned out to be an early 80's Sharp brand hunting knife. Made in Japan no less. I found this out when I decided to inquire more about it via the webbernet's. Sold at K-Mart in the early 80's, and for some reason, even considering its point of sale origins, pretty well regarded through the community's that spoke of it. I put it away, and for some reason at that moment decided "I want to start a nice little knife collection for myself."

Since then, I've purchased a Kershaw Brawler (for boxes at work) a Kershaw Blur S30V, and last night I bought a Benchmade 581 Osborne Barrage.

I feel like I've begun something that I never knew I'd enjoy so much. So I look forward to talking to everyone on here and learning new things about a new hobby.

Thanks for reading my bizarre and pointless tale!

Welcome to the forums - How is the Brawler doing at work and what kind of beer? :)

The rounded tanto tip works extremely well for opening boxes. It even feels less likely to damage the contents inside than a normal box cutter. It works out amazingly well for that sort of task. Handle is a little small for my hands, but that's more because of me and not the knife itself, ya know?

The beer of choice tonight is a Mexican beer, Modelo. I wanted to save the Irish beers for tomorrow!

When I was doing some months of stocking I would use the tape cutter of the box cutter more than the blade - used the bkade for plastic bands or ties and such.

Had a lot of mexican beer when in San Diego or down in Mexico. Always liked it with a slice of lime, especially Corona.

It's so much more fun with a knife though! Haha.

If you've enjoyed Corona, you'd probably really like Modelo, it's much smoother, great with lime as well of course.

Welcome to the blade forums sir!! You better watch your wallet though....they've been known to run at the sight of this place haha!

Yeah, I can already tell. My largest purchase was the BM Barrage. Can't wait for it to get here!!

Next one, which may be this Friday, I'm thinking of getting the SOG Vulcan. Then either a Spyderco Native or Paramilitary 2 if I can find it.

Thankfully, i really don't spend much money on anything else besides maybe my ATV. Oh, and saving up for a wedding....
