I have a sere 2k and just 2 days ago the lock seemed to start to slip ever so slightly. I have done the spine wack thing and the lock holds. Is this something that I need to be concerned about? I love the knife, but this bothers me some what. What should I do?

I hope I don't start a flame war here but spine whacking has its proponents and those who think it's unrealistic.

Some SERE 2K's have had lock issues as have many other liner locks (I recently had to return a Blade-Teck Wegner). The lock arm should not move towards disengaging when you apply pressure to the top of the blade (be careful please) at all. If it does it probably means the fit between the liner and blade was too loose to begin with and you need a new liner.

To my knowledge, Al Mar has always been good to its customers and stood behind its knives 100%. I suggest you give them a call.

Thanks for the reply. I had planned on doing that, but wanted to get some other input. I will do that promptly.

Does the spine wack test damage the knife?

I never felt it neccessary to do this to any knife I own but thinking about it would seem to be a good way to test the lock but does the impact damage the lock?

The lock on my old buck 112 used to be perfect but after years of use it has a very tiny amount of play when I try to cut something hard.

Does doing the wack prematurely wear out the lock?

What do you guys think?

Was this knife purchased new, or was it used?? and if used, how old? Also--how far does the liner slide over? You need to provide alot more specific info before responses here will become more helpful. If it survives moderate spine-whacking it's probably not an issue.

I had a Sere 2000 it had a little bit of lock movement when pressure was applied to the top of the blade. The movement was not enough to disengage the lock but it was more than I liked. I ended up sending it back to Al Mar and they fixed it up good as new. Good luck with you problem, let us know how you make out.

The knife is brand new, a week and a half to be exact. I bought the knife to take on a deployment to Iraq, but I doubt very seriously that I will be taking it along with me. I have contacted Al Mar, and have yet to get a response. This has been one week since I contacted them. The liner slides even with the end of the blade. I really like this knife, but I wonder if I should even take the time to bother with it. I would like to get an 806d2 to take instead now.

If you are looking for an alternative to the Sere 2000, the Benchmade 806D2 would get my vote, it is a tough as nails, no holds barred knife.

The only thing that makes me wonder about the 806 is the d2. True it is a tought steel, but the staining makes me cringe. I know it is a coated blade, but still. I think mil-tec should take care of that.

My Sere didn't engage the lock as much as I wanted to...simple fix.

Take it apart and give the lock bar a little more pressure to fix a new, slightly stronger bend in it. I'm sure this will be what Al Mar would do if you sent it back.

You'll end up learning about how beautifully made this knife is if you do.

You might want to check all the screws that hold the knife together and make sure they're all tight. The lock on my Military would slip to the end of the blade tang, but not enough to disengage. Tightening all the screws holding it together fixed that. Absolutely rock solid now.
