Last week, some folks gave my son a $50.00 gift certificate to a local sporting goods store for his birthday. He wanted to buy a knife with it.
He looked at several different knives before finally deciding on a Spyderco Navigator. I explained to him that it had the same blade steel as my prized Calypso Jr. (VG-10). He is pretty proud of that knife, especially since it is the first one that he actually picked out for himself. I had to pony up a few extra dollars to help him make the purchase, but I was glad to do it.
I told him how proud I was that he chose something of quality that he could someday pass on to his little boy, rather than some cheap trinket that would be broken, trashed, and forgotten in a little while.
Just trying to get him started down that same road we're all walking.
