Last week, some folks gave my son a $50.00 gift certificate to a local sporting goods store for his birthday. He wanted to buy a knife with it.

He looked at several different knives before finally deciding on a Spyderco Navigator. I explained to him that it had the same blade steel as my prized Calypso Jr. (VG-10). He is pretty proud of that knife, especially since it is the first one that he actually picked out for himself. I had to pony up a few extra dollars to help him make the purchase, but I was glad to do it.

I told him how proud I was that he chose something of quality that he could someday pass on to his little boy, rather than some cheap trinket that would be broken, trashed, and forgotten in a little while.

Just trying to get him started down that same road we're all walking. ;)

Great, now teach him well and he'll be set for life. As I have frequently said, I started with an old Barlow that my brother gave me when he got the first Swiss Army Knife I ever saw for Christmas of 1949. He was eleven and I had just turned seven.

I had to wait until age 9 and then it was a farking Camp King!

you get the cool dad award today!

Happy Birthday to the little Fella!
I wish we had Spyderco around when I was his age.:D I got one of my Dad's old folders when I turned six. That started me on a life long love affair with knives.

He made an excellent choice for his first knife, Coonskinner. He must of definitely made you proud. :)

All my 7 and 8 year old boys think about, are their :barf: Nintendo gameboys. :grumpy: When they are a little older though, I plan on also teaching them in the ways of the Spyder. ;)

I am proud of him. He is the kind of kid that wants to be outdoors 25 hours a day. He'd sleep out behind the house in his tent if I would let him.

He loves to hunt and fish with me, and I'm glad to have him along. His favorite foods are frog legs and deer steaks. I guess he is an unusual seven-year-old, but I like him like he is.:)
