Most of my friends, and all my wifes, the ex's and the to-be, think that I have too many knives. Now, compared to some others on this forum, I am very small potatoes. I have about 300 knives, but no real direction in what I own -- I buy what I like.

Although I am getting the custom-knife bug from y'all here, my collection is mostly production knives, and they cover a wide range of styles -- hunters, folders, tactical, fighting, etc. I have some vintage Al Mar, old Cold Steel, old and new Marbles, Blackjack, Bark River, Case, Bulldog, Fight'n Rooster, vintage Gerber, REKAT, DeLeon, Randall, Benchmade, Bowen, Microtech, KA-BAR, etc.

But I hide a perversion.

I have an unexplained fondess for the German-made hunting knives so common in the late 50's and 60's -- you know the kind, about a 4"-5" blade, stag handle, aluminum butt caps etc. I go along fine for months, not even thinking about this type of knife, then . . . I relapse. I think it must be from my childhood, where I had several of these knifes, and remember carrying them fondly on many expeditions to the local woods. This was when a kid could do that without getting sent to juvie hall.

There. It's off my chest. I feel better now.

And what makes that shameful? My first knife that I bought for myself (late 60s) was one of those German stag-handled hunters, and I still have it. That knife went many places with me in the woods, I even carried it around the neighborhood for a while. It only cost me a couple of dollars, I wish my knife madness were so cheaply appeased now.

Buying what you like is the best way to do it!

I know EXACTLY the kind of knives you're talking about. First thing that came to my mind was the Puma brand.

For me, it is daggers. I find their symmetry and curvy tips to be perfect. Well, daggers and tomahawks/axes. I'd liek to have a room displaying Gransfors Bruks, Iltis, cheap hardware store axes, ATC hawks, Lonnie Hansen hawks, etc. Kind of a hawk and axe museum! I'd liek to invite neighbors over to look and enjoy. And they'd be awed and want to stay all day. Hehe, one can dream!

Well, at least I have my ATC VTAC hawk (thanks Vel!) It's a start!

I also still have the one I got when I was about eight years old, as well as a slightly nicer one that was my fathers. When I was 10 he and I both got variations of the Marbles Ideal (this was about 1965) which I also still have.

Crayola:

I've been thinking about getting a tomahawk or two. I think every edged weapon assortment should have one or ten.
