Ah, here's the deal. Three weeks ago, I decided I should stop drinking sodas, well because they're bad for you, and most of the guys on the football team had tried giving something up. So I make a deal with my dad that if I don't drink any for 3 weeks, he'll buy me a new knife. Tomorrow we're going down to the lumber yard and I'm interested in hearing about some of these patterns.
First off, they're all Case. Mini muskrat(Red bone CV) Mini trapper(Yellow synthetic CV) or Medium stockman(Amber bone, square bolster, pen blade-instead-of-spey CV)

I'm intrigued by the mini muskrat, I've never owned anything like it. I carry and use a yellow handled medium stockman that I've had since I was little.

Any thoughts whatsoever would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Will

Well, I just picked up a tiny Trapper yesterday, so a mini Trapper should be pretty nice because it's a little bigger. The med. Stockman sounds nice, too, but since you already have one, do you want another? For some reason, I'm not a big fan of muskrats, so for me, it'd be between those 2.

However, as with anything else, you might prefer the muskrats.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Not to sway your opinion, but I have the exact med. stockman you described and I love it. In fact, everytime I carry another knife for a day or two, I always miss it and go back to it. I especially like the fact that it's CV. It takes a little more maintenance, but you just can't beat a carbon steel blade in my opinion.

This would be my choice.

I love my Mini Trapper, it has quickly become my favorite knife. Ofcourse, that's just my opinion. If you really like the Muskrat, go with what tickles your fancy.

:thumbup:I pretty much exclusively edc a Muskrat switching between the RED BONE CV Case mini, and Schrade USA 77OT (Old Timer) get it you will not be disapointed ;) the Turkish Clip is one of the best all around blade profiles besides the Wharnclif IMHO there are very few offerings in this combo :grumpy: avaliable!

All nice choices. Can't go wrong with CV steel. The patina you'll eventually get will give the knife a personality that will make it a one of a kind. Let us know what you end up with.

I have a mini-trapper, and carry it periodically. Only difference is that mine is amber bone with SS blades. I can see the purpose in blade duplication (which is what the muskrat gives you)- but it is also a limiter. You get only clip blades. The trapper keeps you with 2 full size blades, and gives you some diversity (I am a spey blade fan). I regularly EDC a small/medium Buck 373 stockman, and I respect the capability of it's small blades. The spey and sheepsfoot blades get used more than the clip blade if you can believe that. And, their reduced length isn't really a hinderance, since the full size clip blade is there for bigger tasks. Like I said before, I'm a spey blade fan. I probably wouldn't buy a stockman without a spey blade, but if you don't like the spey blade, don't let that be your criteria for not choosing that pattern. Given the options you presented, I would choose the mini-trapper, based on my biases- but it sounds like you like the Muskrat, which you should choose if you like it. Patterns are a personal thing, and as long as you like the blades that model has:)

I'm also glad to see that somebody raised you to take a likeing to quality, traditional, American made cutlery. Good luck with your goal- hopefully you'll be able to keep yourself off the stuff for good.

CV blades for sure

Mini-Trapper from the choices you presented.

I have nothing against a Stockman, still my reasons why I suggest the Mini-Trapper:

- A proper Stockman should have clip, sheepsfoot and spey blades.
If not, one is better off getting a Texas Jack with just the clip and pen.

-Many folks new to the Stockman , complain of the sheepfoot sticking up a bit and not being comfortable in using the clip or spey.
This is normal, and since many are new to a knife, they are not comfortable with the idea once they find out they can lower the blade by removing a wee bit of metal from the kick.
Then folks are not comfy with actually doing this adjustment.

-Mini-Trapper is more comfortable, and will do as much work as the full size Trapper for most folks.

It is also very pocket friendly and surprises many folks being so.

Just me, still I think everyone should try the Mini-Trapper and Stockman side by side before they buy.
Some find the round bolsters carry better than square.

It is the little things, that come out later, so if one can try before they buy, they are better off.

Personal preference and "fit" to user's hands and tasks.

Hey Gautier, thanks for that pic again, it had been my wallpaper on the computer for a while. As for which knife, I'm actually leaning more and more towards the mini trapper. I do own a medium stockman in yellow CV, and adjusted the kick on the sheepsfoot. It's more of an aesthetic thing why I included the square bolstered model. Also, if you carry a muskrat, or a knife with two (or more) identical blades, could you describe its uses?
I'll be off to the store today, hopefully.

Thanks again,
Will

I'm sorry, Mnblade. I'm what you'd call an "enabler" :D. Couple that with the fact that I'm happy with my purchase, and I can't help but want to spread the good word. Now if only the rest of my knives were as photogenic I could start a desktop calendar :p

I have a Muskrat that I really like, but having the same blade is redundant, I would rather carry a single blade slimline.
The blades on a mini-trapper are also too similar in size.

My personal preference is for the stockman for the versality of the shape and lengths of the blades. The pen is more useful for me as a blade to the spey. I have looked at a Texas Jack, but this stockman is also a 32 pattern but the third blade being that so useful sheepsfoot.

Well thought out post, Neeman.

One of the things that I particularly like about the Case Small Texas Jack (6232) is that the secondary blade is kind of a cross between a sheepfoot and a pen. Since the spey on my stockman knives (about my favorite pattern) is ordinarily my least used blade, that hybrid blade on the small jack makes it extremely useful.

(By the way, Ken Erickson told me that Ken Coats told him that that blade is called a "spear". I've looked at some of my older books with blade illustrations and have seen somewhat similar blades called a spear but none that were quite the same, fwiw.)

I hear ya, Neeman. Well, you know what I mean...
