I just received a lnib small regular with a bg42 blade. I'm 99.9% certain it's not a fake, but I was wondering if I might get some of the CRK forum expert's opinions on a few variances that I've noticed, and on whether or not it's a legitimate CRK.
First off, the thumb lug has sharp/rough edges. It makes opening the blade really easy because it catches my thumb with it's sharp edges. I actually like this feature, but I've never experienced it before with any other CRK. I did a little bit of searching and I found this thread by Nikkogi which is about his small regular with the sharp edged thumblugs... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1170778-Regular-Sebenza-Thumb-Lug Currently Nikoggi's small regular is at CRK getting serviced. So if they service it, I suspect the sharp lugs are legitimate. **Upon closer inspection of my own photos below, it almost looks as if the edges of the thumb lug were roughed up during production somehow. Possibly a minor production flaw? In any case, I actually really like how it grips my thumb and makes opening a breeze.**
The second thing that I noticed is that there is a cutout on the outside part of the lock bar right under the pocket clip as well as underneath the lock bar where it's normally seen. I have done a little research on this as well, and it appears that there have been a number of sebenzas over the years with this outer cutout on the lock bar. This is the first time that I've personally seen a cut out on the outside part of a lock bar on the smalls, but I have had a large regular with this feature. I also read a thread regarding this feature where another member stated they had a small regular with the lock bar cut out on the outer side.
The third irregularity that I noticed is that the CRK logo is placed just a little to the left of the pivot screw rather than where it is usually placed on most sebenzas. After doing some more photo research, it appears that there is a small number of bg42 regulars with the logo slightly off to the left rather than where it's usually placed. So far, I've located about 15 different photos of different regulars (mostly smalls) with the CRK logo just slightly off to the left of the pivot screw instead of directly above it like on most sebenzas.
The last thing that had me a little worried is the box that came with it. It has large perforated dash marks along the edges, and it just looks a little different than most of the boxes I've handled in person.
If any of the CRK experts here can confirm these production variances, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm mostly concerned that it might not be legit. The condition is lnib if not NOS. It feels like it's barley ever been handled and needs to break in. Although it feels super smooth like glass on glass/bank vault smooth, it is very stiff and does not swing freely when the lock is pushed open. I figure that's because it isn't broken in yet. The inside of the handle slabs are marked with either "0 00", or a "C 00".
Please check out the photos below, and let me know what you think. Legit or fake?
Shot of how the logo is placed slightly to the left rather than where it is normally located on the sebenzas...
Date Stamp..
Here you can see the cut out on the outer part of the lock bar...
The following photos are of the box and it's stickers...
In this photo you can see the stickers, and where somebody at some point might have sliced the top of the box by accident possibly when un-boxing it from a postal package...
I find all the slight variances that have occurred in design from year to year with the sebenzas very interesting. Line ridges on the slab's spine, blasted screws, cut outs on the outer part of the lock bar, blade steels, logo placement, etc.
