Okay so I took three swipes at a cardboard box with my SNFO. After I got done the part of the blade (about an inch or two from the tip) was completely dull and I mean dull. What the hell is that about. The SNFO has a flat grind to it but I can't imagine that this would dull a SFNO. Any help would be grealty appreciated.

Dang. And I have always heard that Student Naval Flight Officers were a sharp group...:D

You probably meant to post your question on the Busse forum and not on the Buck forum. However, you might have hit a staple imbedded in the cardboard and that dulled your blade. Good luck.

thanks oregon, I was searching the memory banks and couldnt come up with that from Buck. I must confess, as little as I know about Bucks, it is still exponentially more than I know about any other brand.

My pleasure imafritz.

Cardboard can be more of a challenge than you might think.

Somewhat like the OP I took a new Japanese sword out to test its sharpness on a cardboard box in the carpeted living room, many years ago, with both young sons watching from a safe distance. I gave it one robust two-handed swing and instantly cut thru the heavy 4' box (dishwasher box as I recall), the carpet/pad and well into the plywood floor. The blade survived, I was embarassed, the boys were scared and the sword went back onto the wall in a scabbard. I survived only due to the fact that my lovely wife never knew because I stappled the carpet back together (no real need to tell her even now).:D

i know nothing ... not a thing...
yes seen what those can do once.. impressive

Cardboard is largely made from recycled materials. This can be from old cardboard boxes that have been broken down, pulverized and made into a slurry of pulp to make the new boxes. Staples and other objects are not filtered out in this process, so your blade may be hitting all sorts of metal impurities, broken bits of staples, glass, etc. unless the box is made from pure virgin pulp, but even then you may get saw chip pieces.

My recommendation: Buy a Buck knife with one of their premium steels for regular use...and a Martor-Primax for cutting boxes:

Our 30th anniversary is this June 21, summer solstice. She only wants a dinner date. The sweet woman deserves a medal. I can't even put up with myself at time!

The sword vs carpet capper could be the last straw...

Oh thank goodness Buck does not make an snfo!!! I was about to tear this place apart trying to figure out which model that was!
I know that in the C.A.T.R.A. edge retention machine they use a special paper since paper tends to be very rough on blades.
