Hi Guys,

here is one happy guy speaking! :DToday my SOG scuba/demo was delivered in The Netherlands, were I live! It took so long, because a lot went wrong with shipping and so one :jerkit: but finally it arrived!

Then the knife.... It is incredible! I know how it looked like of course, but I never saw one in real life. I own quite a lot of knives know, but this one even outperforms my custom Buck 819 (S30V) series in every way! (and I hate to say this!)
The shape of the blade is incredible, ergonomics are fantastic, and the blade is really hair shaving, scary sharp, right out of the box! The sheath is very ruggedized and all together...., well forget about expensive custom mades ore Randall's! This one is a beauty, very functional and craftmanship all the way. Made in Seki.

I would say: get one now they are still availbale on evil-bay! You won't regret it! And besides of that, it will be a good investment I think, because SOG stopped production.

QUESTIONS: - were al the SOG Scuba/demo's made in Seki?

- Are there special tools for the spanning nut, at top of the handle?

It's my favorite. That's for sure. It is a good design. Too bad SOG dropped it from their current line. That knife can take a load of abuse. Out of the box it is an excellent survival/bush knife. Sharpen that top edge up to about a notch before teeth and you got yourself a tactical knife as well. If you are going to use it than you might want to treat the leather handle with neats foot oil (New Pig Hunter idea). Especially since you're in the Netherlands. Basically, you get a dish brush and dish detergent and clean off the water based finish on the leather and let it dry. Then use a tooth brush to wipe plenty of the thick oil on it for a couple of days. This will treat the leather and make it more wear resistant. Also, don't try sharpening this steel with a cheap stone. You'll be disappointed. The steel is extremely hard and needs to be sharpened by other means. New Pig Hunter has a method to get SOG AUS8 scary sharp. I use a bench grinder with card board wheels. There are other methods but remember this is a hard knife to sharpen. But once it is razor sharp it will hold up for a long time.

Any idea why the steel is so hard? How many Rockwells is it, I thought something like 58-60? I don't quite ounderstand what you mean with a "bench grinder with card board wheels"? Do you have a photo or a link?
I read already new Pighunters idea about the leather handle. I'm not sure if I can get this oil in The Netherlands, but I guess good leather-wax will do the job too?
Thanks for your answer. I think the Scuba/Demo will become my favorite too! It will be very, very difficult to find a knife which pleases me more.... It's an amazing knife, that's for sure! Any idea when Sog started the production?

As for sharpening, I alway use the 3-way sharpening stone from Buck: http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&ProductID=3026

If you are good with that Buck sharpener than you should be all right.

Cardboard wheels: http://www.sharpeningwheels.com/

Look up "richard j" on these forums and he will give you a lot of information on these types of wheels.

I think SOG started out with the SCUBA/DEMO in the late 80s. Somebody will correct that if I'm wrong.

Congratulations !!!!

and thanks much for the kind words ....

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. I have to hang my head in shame: I don't have a Scuba/Demo in my SOG collection .....

p.p.s. I've never heard of the cardboard wheel sharpening system. I looked at the website, they have a distributor about 8 miles south of me. I'll have to take a drive down and check it out.

Let us know how your inspection of the card-board wheels went, Carl! Afterall, I DO have a bench grinder on which those wheels should fit..... You don't have the SOG Scuba/Demo? I thought you wrote the sory of how to treat the leather handle??? Which SOG's DO you have and which one is your favorite?
Next knife I'm looking at is a Bark River, should be pretty darn good as well......:D

Yes, I did offer an idea about treating the leather handle with Neatsfoot Oil. The testing was done on my SOG Bowie.

I have 2 SOG's with leather handles:
-- Bowie (S1 model)
-- Recon Bowie

The Bowie is the coolest but the blade goes "dull" after being stored for awhile, can't figure it out.

The Recon Bowie is fantastic and holds the hair-popping razor edge no matter how long it is stored, can't figure it out either.

Cheers,

Carl

I regret that I never bought a Scuba/Demo. I love my Recon Bowie though. That steel is a serious pain in the ass to sharpen for me. I don't know why. I can sharpen all of my other blades to the point where you simply point them at your arm and the hair gets scared and jumps off, but for some reason I just have the hardest time with the SK-5 blade on the Recon. I love it, but man do I hate it.

How or with what do you sharpen your blades, Dylside?

I have several different tools. I have the Sharpmaker (rarely use), a Smiths diamond ceramic plate set (usually use), a Smiths carbide scraper thingy (use to reshape edges sometimes), some regular stones (rarely use), and a strop with "the green stuff" that I always use to finish the edges up. Usually I'll use the Smiths set (I don't use the blade clip guide. I just do it by hand) then touch it up with the strop. On damn near every blade I own it works perfect. Just not on that SK-5 steel blade that the Recon has. That's the only one that gives me grief.
