Had the SOG Super Bowie out in the Mojave desert over the weekend, and I'm guessing the hot dry weather shrunk up the leather washers of the handle. Today, I noticed that the guard was a bit loose, it would wiggle just a bit.
Now, as background, when I got the SOG last year the little nut holding the pommel & handle tight became loose, so I tightened it. Well, I'm again guessing the leather washers took some compression set, perhaps shrunk just a bit in the hot & dry, and now the guard is slightly loose.
SO, sometimes not being able to leave well enough alone, I removed the little nut, the pommel, and all the leather washers. So far so good.
I then mixed up a quantity of JB Weld and put a couple of tiny dabs between the front of the guard and the blade, then put the rest of it into the cavity inside the guard, against the blade.
Then I replaced the leather washers, the pommel, and the little nut. I used some Blue Loctite on the little nut threads and tightened it up nice and tight.
The SOG is now held firmly point-down in the vise jaws (using a cloth so the finish isn't marred) to let the JB Weld flow down & settle into the cavity and set up over night.
If all goes according to plan, the guard will never wiggle again.
Cheers,
Carl
