So after a week of delaying my son's birth with his mom and I having a stomach bug I should have a boy about 13 hours from now. I want to order him a knife the day he is born to give him on his 18th bday. Been looking at case knives and seeing how he will be a 7th generation Texan I would like that to have some influence. Looking at folders but am open to anything. Need answers within 24 hours obviously.

Thanks

Although I prefer folding knives, as he's a multigenerational Texas boy, how about a nice fixed blade, perhaps with his DOB engraved?

If I was getting born tomorrow, I'd want a knife right away and another one on my 18th. ;)

Not a bad idea. Boy will need a good skinnng knife before long.

Im sure he will have a hell of a collection by then.

Well, I don't know what your price range is but I'm 18 and if my mom got me anything from a Kershaw Skyline, to a Benchmade 940 I'd be insanely hyped!

Both Gayle Bradley and Les George are knifemakers / designers that live in Texas (Weatherford and Corpus Christi, respectively). A list of Gayle Bradley's designs can be found here, and Les George's here. I believe the ones that they produce directly (not the collaboration pieces) are all made in their respective facilities in Texas.

Spyderco makes a couple of Gayle Bradley's designs (the Bradley Folder and the Air). Les George recently made a collaboration piece with Zero Tolerance, the ZT 0900, but that's not out yet. There are a couple of places taking preorders for it though, so technically you can purchase it today/tomorrow. The Spydercos are made in Taiwan at their excellent facility in Taichung, and the ZT is made in the USA at their factory in Oregon.

I'm certain there are other knifemakers in Texas, but those are the two that I can think of that have collaboration pieces with production companies. Getting on the waitlist for custom makers can usually take a while, especially the more popular ones.

Just left a message for moore maker here in Texas asking if they could do a custom drop point skinner. Will see if they call back tomorrow I guess.

Price range isn't a big concern. Maybe under $200.

Ya get a handmade knife for the lad!

Alox Cadet from Knifeworks.com. They will inscribe it for you before they ship it. You can get his name and DOB on it.

I vote for this because it is a knife that you can give him at a young age to teach him the responsibility of carrying a blade. It also will not scare people to death when he uses it. They are also cheap enough that you can get one for him, yourself, and his mother. Once he is responsible enough for this, you can have one made for him on his 18th by a custom maker.

Just my 2 cents.

Moore Makers are not made in Texas. They are made by Bear (AL?) and Queen (PA)

^^^ How about a nice Texas Toothpick? Case, Queen, Great Eastern, Northwoods - lots of really good stuff out there. Probably should have started looking sooner...

I've been looking for a little while. Just can't make a decision.

Just ordered a case trapper in teak wood with the state of Texas on the side. Thanks for the input. I carried a trapper today, so it seemed appropriate.

How about a Gayle Bradley? He is Texan knifemaker who makes some really nice fixed blades.

On Monday (or Tuesday if they are closed), call Chris Reeve Knives and ask them what they made on 2/13 and have them send you something or tell you where they shipped them to.

I got a Large Insingo born the same date as my daughter.

How about a Darrel Ralph custom... they are made in Forney, TX.
