today. He came in and gave it to my wife, she e-mailed me at work and told me about it. I came home and looked at it, but it wasn't one of mine. It is an old automatic Schrade, the handles are orange with a bone like texture. The blade has Schrade Walden New York USA engraved on the tang. It has one blade on one side and a hook-like thing on the other side, it is shaped like and upside down J or U. Only the main blade is automatic. The hook blade is opened like a regular slipjoint. It has a pushbutton to open it, complete with a sliding lock. Does anybody know anything about this type of Shrade? How old it could be? What was the purpose of it? We bought our home a little over a year ago and have found all kinds of antiques and things in our barn and studio, but this one intrigues me more than the rest. I appreciate any help we can get.

That is an old paratrooper knife. It was made for one hand use by a paratrooper hanging from his parachute. As for age, not sure, but maybe 50's?

but it's made by Schrade. The only other people who have owned this place were the original owners, both now deceased. The husband had owned this place since the thirties. I don't have a clue where it came from. I thought I had looked this place over pretty good, but I guess i didn't.

Might I suggest that you post this in the Schrade Forum, as there are several VERY knowledgeable Schrade collectors in the forum. One in particular, lt632rt, is a published expert on American automatics. It sounds like a bird knife with a guthook, but it could be a horseman's knife, as well. From the days when a "Pressbutton" was not an evil knife, just a onehander. But those folks over there will help you.
