I gave my son his first custom today. I ordered a scaled LDK from Stomper (JK Handmade Knives) for him. John decided to send him(without me knowing) a matching firesteel as well as one of his new pocket sheaths with steel holder.

Again many thanks John.

In hand shot..

It quickly passed my son's " make a pointy stick test" .

And his "slice grass test"

It went into his pocket and we went for a hike at a public dam.

Later at home.....This is what you get when my son has a knife, ferro rod, and a bit of jute twine.

And ,as a proud Dad, I can say only two stikes on the ferro rod!!!!!!!

Great stuff. I bet he really digs the colour. The ferro-rod/pocket sheath is a great combination for a boy. What could be better? Now you will have to give him the whole fire safety speech!

Already have.:) He has a mag block,LMF Scout, and now John's rod. And he is a Webelo.

You see when he is at my ex's house he can't have a lighter or matches.;) And they have a bit of land too that he hikes in.

(what she don't about firesteels can't hurt her ,or him :D )

Awesome.

That's a great little knife / rod combo (I just ordered one of John's excellent fire kits for myself, actually), and a perfect little duo for a young lad. I like the fact that it has a handle with some meat to it. Often, the first knives we give young people have small(ish) handles (SAKs, 110-types, etc.). These are just fine - my own EDC has a pretty thin handle - but a wider handle allows you to play around with different grips and I find that it is nicer on the hands during extended carving sessions.

Also, I'm all for encouraging young kids to play with fire (responsibly!). I gave my 14 year old cousin his first mag block and ferro rod a while back, and I'm told that he takes it out a few times a week and practices fire starting in the back yard (in suburban Toronto). It's good to start 'em young!

All the best,

- Mike

Thanks for sharing.
I love the blue scales. I'll have to keep SWMBO from seeing them though.
It's great seeing kids out enjoying our hobbies. I loved it when I was a kid and I think I turned out ok.

that's one lucky kid! wish I had a dad like that growing up... very nice Knife combo & a great job on the fire!

Where did you hike, Todd? That area looks familiar to me . . .

I wish my dad had given me something like that at that age, but he's never been much of a knife guy.

That was at the West Thompson Dam (Army Corps of Engineers land ), on the Ramsdale Woods Trail.

Wow, that a A class act of kindness by Stomper. It's this kind of random acts of kindness that makes this forum awesome. Good on you Stomper.

That's a lovely knife steel sheath combo for a kid.

God Bless

John you are indeed one hell of a guy. Great little kit, I'm sure your son will treasure it for a lifetime.
