My oldest son is only 7, but he is the one who follows all the rules and is very responsible, so I thought i'd make him a knife, his younger brother is a bit more reckless he might be 17 before i give him a knife! I had a few blanks that had already been shaped, and heat treated so i let him pick from a few of them. He also picked the handle material, he chose some scraps leftover from another project. I did the cutting, gluing and rough sanding then he took over. I would hand him a piece of sandpaper and showed him how to sand everything on the handle, when he said he was done i would take a look at it and tell him if was really done or not, and we moved on through the various grits. He wiped on the tung oil finish, and helped stitch the sheath as much as he could. I haven't had a chance to sharpen it yet but he is very proud of it.

The blade is O1, 1/8" thick, it was one of the first blade i did myself and there are things i've gotten better at, but it'll do.

Very neat project! What is the handle material? I love the lighter wood bolsters...that aren't bolsters, whatever you want to call them! With your sheaths, try using a compass to make sure your stitches stay about an 1/8th inch away from the edge to keep that distance uniform.

The lighter wood is spalted tamarind, it is such a cool wood but loses its wow factor on smaller pieces like this. Thanks for the tip on the sheaths, that portion is not my strong suit.

That's neat! I'm just getting into leather work as well, it's a totally different world on it's own!
