My StarTac lockup

I just received a StarTac from the exchange, really excited to get as I've been lusting over one for quite sometime. I collect knives and I was intending on having this as my daily user. I'm happy with it so far in total but I am a bit concerned about its lockup. I do understand that Umnumzaans in general have a later lockup and that the ceramic ball contacts the tang earlier than it seems but this one is pushing 85% as seen through the marking on the blade tang. The first pic is a bit misleading as it seems to cover more in person.

When I open it, the lockbar seems to be at or above 80% and I can press it further down do just about 100%. It locks up solid with no play and I got the pivot tuned ideally but I'd like to hear what you all think. Out of all the lockup threads and pics I've seen on my search, I think that this is the latest lockup I have seen so far. I think Haze offered up a pic of his three and one of it was like mine but other than that, I'm concerned that mine might be out of spec.

Here's some pics, thanks for the input guys.

I have heard that the locks on the zaan vary a lot. Mine is right at about 50, which seems to be an exception. My friend has one that is similar to yours, it locks up solid and he said it hasn't moved. If you think it is out of spec, email a pic to Heather at CRK and they will tell you.

Edited to add: I have mine in my pocket right now, it is one of my favorite larger knives!

Yeah, as long as it is within spec I am okay with it. It's second hand, I'll contact CRK just to make sure that the wear is normal and not caused by user assembly. Like I said, I plan on making this knife a daily carry/user so I just want to make sure that I have all my bases covered and if ever the time comes that it does wear in to affect lockup, that the warranty will cover it.

This probably won't be my last Umnumzaan, love it so far. May buy another :D

Both my 21's have fairly late lockup, but haven't moved. CRK seems to like a fairly late lockup.

If you're worried about it, I'd be happy to break in that Uumnum for you for a while! ;0)

my 21 is at about 55-60 and it seems like its not going to move for a long time, my brothers Zaan is at about 75percent and has always been there

I have a tanto Umnum and 2 StarTac's, all three are just like yours.

I was also concerned about it when I got it, called CRK, sent it in per their request, and they told me that is well within spec.

I trusted their word( though I was still a bit concerned) and I have carried that knife as my edc for approx 2 years and 9 months now. I use the knife daily and the lock hasn't worn any further, it sits in the same place as the day it came back from the inspection at CRK.

Use it without worry, it'll serve you well.

I don't own a 'zaan, but I do own a 25 and have owned a few others. I wouldn't be concerned by that in the least. Heck I've seen regular lock interface CRKs that are that far over new.

Seriously, I wouldn't sweat it.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Glad to know that even this is considered normal. If it ever does end up hitting the opposite scale down the road, I suppose my concern was if CRK would cover it under warranty as I wasn't sure if the lockup was this late intentionally or me and the previous owner was somehow putting it together wrong causing the late lockup, which I doubt but you never know. And like I said, I can squeeze it until the lockbar hits just about 100% which is kind of weird.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't blame you for worrying. I do it too.

Consider this a virtual form of (someone you really respect and/or trust) gently and comfortingly laying a hand on your shoulder and saying, "go forth my son, and use the dog crap out of your fancy pants knife, it's perfectly fine."

;)

Hahaha, good one! :D :D

FCM, I looked at your request, and you're fine. For comparison I looked at my favorite of my Zaans an old pivot/new LBS model. It's the smoothest, nicest Zaan I've ever owned, and it locks up as late as yours does. Like the others have said, use the hell out of it, and know Chris has your back if there's ever a problem.

I just opened mine and squeezed as hard as I could, and got the lockbar so close I could barely slide a piece of paper between that and the scale. Still there was no lock rock or stickyness at all. Just a normal Zaan ready to go to work.

Mine has an unusually early lockup. Ceramic ball at 40% Not sure if it's a problem.

HA HA now we have a early lockup! Both your umnums are fine. Keep it sharp!

Yeah, I'm sure it is. Seems like everyone's umnum has later (60% +) lockup. I'm the only one with an early one!

I just got my second Sebenza 25 (sold my first one, cause i couldn't open it with one hand,no matter what i did with the pivot) and lock up seems to be at 95%. Is that normal? I'm stationed in Europe for now and getting those knifes here is a nightmare for me, and same for sending them back to fix.... Got StarTac Umnumzaan in the same shipment with a blade centering off... Is it my luck or quality control went down the drain at CRK??? Three $500 knifes - three disasters! I don't think i'll be getting another CRK anytime soon. Sorry for the rant guys, i had to let it out.

That's odd that the blade is off center. I would think the huge washers/tolerances would eliminate that.

The other two I wouldn't call disasters. My 25 is a little hard to open. Your lock is fine.

Guys have you not watched the shop tour videos? Aside from all of the other evidence, they clearly show an inlay Sebenza close up as an example of their quality and it has a lock bar that rides nearly all the way over. And that's on a brand new knife!

Stop trippin and use your knives, they're fine.

Mines at 75% and I called CRK and was told that it just right and they like it that late. Safety I guess
