Been using EdgeProApex for many years. I do not like having to hold the knife (for a couple reasons).

Bought the Tormek T4 after watching several vidoes. Once I got it, I realized how much it relies on the operator. I feel like I'm free-handing it. I must digress.

Considering the TSProf. Lineup is confusing but it looks awesome. A lot of stones to choose from and most are out of stock...

Now I'm seriously considering the Hapstone R2 Black, thanks to a suggestions from a gentleman in another thread.

Anyone want to share differences between TSProf (whatever model) and Hapstone R2 Black? I normally don't ask for help like this but I'm mentally and physically (and financially?) drained this week.

I want to be able to do a 10deg angle.
I'd like to be able to do large kitchen knives (8"?10"?).
But mainly, it will be used for 4" blades.

Any issues with flipping the knife over and getting a different angle on these systems?

Any issues clamping certain knives? If so, is doublesided tape a simple remedy?

Any issues re-profiling a blade? I've never done this on EdgePro because I don't like holding the knife with my fingers for that long.

Quality issues? Any other minor things you've experienced worth noting?

(i may add more questions here as they come to me)

I'm very close to buy the Hapstone R2 Black. I'm going to lose my shit if I spend more money on something I don't like. Please assist. THANKS!

I have the R2 standard and it does everything I could want in a sharpener. The Black edition is certainly a nice piece of kit, but you don’t necessarily need everything it has in order to sharpen your knives (if budget is a concern). Depending on the knife a 10° angle may require a set of fillet clamps, but that is the case with both the Hapstone or the TSPROF. Reprofiling a blade just requires patience and the proper stone. I can’t imagine that you’d be disappointed in any of the Hapstone offerings.

somebody had a tsprof and a R2 for sale earlier this week...wonder if they're still there?

Here is the Hapstone R2 Classic for sale from another member here:

I have the Hapstone R2 Standard with the Venev Ursa stones and love it. No issues at all. I’ve had mine for about 3 months and have sharpened about 60 knives.

On my EdgePro, the angle on the tip of the knife changes because it basically turns in to a shorter blade. Is there a way to overcome that? This is a pic from someone using a K03 and the bevel looks even to me.

About to order the Hapstone R2 Standard. I'll just use the stones I already have for the EdgePro. That's all I really need and at only spending $270 it won't kill me if I want the TSProf in the future.

I decided to keep the Tormek. It's a really nice water cooled grinder. Still super pissed off the knife jig is absolute crap. Out of sight out of mind!

All in all I'm spending < $1k on sharpening systems in the past month.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

Don’t forget to get the fine tune adaptor and 2 of the spring assisted stopper rings. I would also get an angle cube if you don’t already have one.

I had it in the cart and then I decided if I'm going to spend over $300 instead of $270 I might as well just buy the one being sold on here. ; ) thanks

Don't feel bad. Knife sharpening is a never ending quest for some, like me. I have my original course/fine stone I bought when I was 7. It still works great. At just shy of 60 now, I have oil stones, water stones up to 6000 grit, 12" 2 sided strop, ceramic sharpening sticks, and a 1x30 belt sander & a Tormek T4, but honestly, I wish someone would just make an industrial version of my Gatco Diamond sharpening system.

They all have their place & their own learning curve. But those Russian sharpeners have me intrigued too, so please keep us posted.

Just received a Hapstone R2 Classic from matto6! I just put it together and can't believe I don't have time to get into working it tonight!!! AAAAAAHHHH

And it looks like I'm going to keep the Tormek and the Jap stone. It's a badass water cooled grinder. The knife jig is poorly designed and I still get pissed off looking it... but that's fading and eventually I'll get into it.

TY again matto6!!!

Let us know what you think when you've tried out your new Hapstone system!

I really like the Hapstone! The ball bearings is my favorite feature! Sooo smooth!

I had an issue clamping the mini Emissary because the blade isn't flat anywhere.. had to take the thumb studs off to clamp. I didn't use another clamp to secure the other end of the blade (time and brain power were limited, definitely could have used more clamps) so I think that is why it didn't come out as I expected. Maybe the stones aren't flat? Not sure...

So woke up today, figured out the Tormek and now I love it! LMAO

I re-profiled the blade on my Emissary S30V steel. This would have taken sooooo long with the Hapstone. Didn't even try the Jap stone yet. I'm so thrilled I got the hang of it!

STILL LOVE THE HAPSTONE! I'm sure there will be a time where I prefer to use it over the Tormek. Probably I need new and better stones...

THANKS again!!!!!!!! There's a higher chance I would have went with the TSProf if it wasn't for your deal here. This all worked out splendidly!

Glad you like your systems. You've got a nice combination of systems there now. Tormek for quick re-profiling and Hapstone for the perfect edge. Enjoy!

N nevertakeadayoff What kind of kitchen knives do you have,I seen that you said that you want to sharpen your kitchen knives at 8 to 10 degree's.

I wouldn't go lower then 15 for standard knives like Henkel kitchen knives or Chicago Cutlery the steels in those knives and ones like them that are around 40 to 50 bucks won't hold the edge very well much lower then 15 to 18 degree's.

If you have hand made Japanese chef knives then I go to 11 to 11.5 at the lowest angle for the best sharpness and edge retention,I have 5 Japanese chef knives and I tried sharpening them at 10 degree's and they dull faster but at 11.5 they are pretty much just as sharp as they were at 10 but the edge retention is much much better.

Glad you warmed up to the Tormek, it’s a good machine (if a little spendy).

On my 2000, I got an extra bar kit and added it on top near the switch. Makes it more flexible for weird tool shapes.
