Hey all,

Pitdog's recent thread on survival knife concepts had me wanting to post this. It's not a concept, because I've already made it.

The full tang blade is about 7" long and 1 3/4" wide. It is 154CM steel, 3/16" thick, flat ground by me and heat treated by Paul Bos. Handle is green canvas micarta with stainless steel tubes that I flared into the handle. The sharpened back edge has very fine serrations that are at depth across the bevel so you just sharpen it like a non-serrated blade. I left the flats pretty much as cold rolled. Took it all to 600 wet sand and then glass bead blasted for the finish.

I also made and hand stitched the sheath. The pocket holds a Doans magnesium firestarter and striker, also 154CM and heat treated. The gray rectangle on top of the firestarter is a diamond credit card sized EZ lap that I cut in half lengthwise and (look closely) bent one end, about 3/8", to a 90 degree angle to make it easier to pull out and hold while using. It all nests together and slides into the pocket nicely.

I made it 8 or 9 years ago, so it's seen some use and I like it. So, without further ado, here it is:

And this last one is the love of my life. 2 years old and the boss of the house.

Thanks for looking. If I get a good response, I might post pics of other knives I've made.

How comfortable are the scales when you choke up on the choil? It looks like there is a corner there that might irritate your hand.

I really like the sheath, nice work.

How did you cut the serrations?

Overall, I like it, and I like the sheath.

Post pics of the knives you've made. the concept is perfect in my view. i would go with more of a "bushcrafter" (i'm not a big knife guy) personally than a survival knife, but your workmanship (in steel and leather) looks superd. and the forethought of those accessories is perfect.
love it.
post more.

The sharp looking corner at the finger choil is more a product of the shadowing in the picture + the handle is a little darker from hand oil and sweat than the angle. The angled cut goes to a flat that's only about 1/16" at the blade, and it has enough of a round over to the contour of the handle that it's not uncomfortable at all.

I cut the serrations using a checkering file for a good start, then switched to a needle file.

goatariba, will do.

Looks great to me buddy, I know most on here prefer the Bushcraft blades but to me a blade the style of yours would be real useful whether in a survival situation or just for getting her done around camp !
It is very similar to the mountain man style knives of yesteryear !!!

Great stuff !!!!!!

I've always liked Jack Crain's knives (a real nice guy BTW), so this was my idea of something that would fit in with a camping/hiking trip or the movie Predator.

I like it, especially the sheath. Don't know, but sheaths with pockets always get my attention!

Your knife looks like a knife designed by someone who actually uses their knife a lot. Knife and Sheath are very nice.

Good work there. Very well thought out on the accessories. Really like the long trailing point, bet that would clean a mess o fish!

I like both the knife and the sheath. The sharpener having a bend in it to fit over the firestarter is a great idea.

Nice Job!
