My Survival Tin

June 14, 2010 — Hear is my survival tin i threw together. I dont use this tin as an emergency kit, but as a kit that gets used alot. I use it almost everytime I am in the woods or practicing bushcraft. That way I am familiar with it and always have it on me. If I had nothing else i would like to have this tin. There is still more to add to it. Im going to put some purification tablets in it plus I am going to try to get a cheap tarp and bandanna into it. I also need to add a mirror and whistle. Any suggestions welcome.

This might help folks who don't want to redirect to youtube. The tin looks like a good one that can carry a lot, maybe cut down on the size of the items as you add to it.

A mirror and whistle needed, yes.

Duct tape is handy, I would rather have a spool of it than electrical tape.

A single edge razor blade can be usefull and lays flat.

Fire straws take up less room than the film canister and maybe consider some jute twine instead of the para cord guts, you can tie and use it as tinder. Put the matches in something waterproof.

Something to hold and transport water.

Replace thread with floss, it's much stronger. Some folks wrap line and floss around sewing bobbins. I use a thin straw with rubber washers separating different types of line and have needles in the straw.

A cut off pencil or a pen refill gives you something to write with, I use a space pen cartridge.

Need any med's? Maybe a few aspirin and advil and something to purify water.

A small compass of some sort that is reasonably reliable.

Hi ccr,

A few thoughts and suggestions for you:

You might want to look into getting a new container that (1) closes without the aid of an elastic and (2) is watertight. When you get drenched or dunked in the woods, having dry survival gear can be a big asset.

If it's intended to be an all-around survival tin as opposed to a medical tin, I might ditch the medical scissors in favour of a SAK with scissors (plus other items and a folding blade) and switch the folding knife for a short, sturdy fixed blade.

Nice call with the sandpaper. I would recommend wrapping your sewing thread around something else (a bit of cardboard for tinder?) instead of the paper, so that you won't have to do much unwrapping before you start sharpening.

I would add a small LED flashlight (the Leatherman line is surprisingly good).

Adding a length of duct tape would give you an adhesive, patch, marker, or improvised medical tape in an emergency.

All for now, and all the best,

- Mike

Thanks guys. I will definitely switch the electrical tape for duct tape.

ill pick up some jute soon and throw some in. ill also see if i can get a ziploc bag in. i also put the pen portion from one of those bic pens in so its thinner.

i will be putting a little led light in thanks. i currently dont have any that arent in use but if i get a small fixed blade that will fit ill put it in.

thanks again guys.
