My take-down tool for Umnumzaan

When there is a problem, I try to find a solution. So when my Umnumzaan arrived and I wanted to disasemple it... I took some wood, screws, drill bits, caliper, screws and some elbow grease and made a first proto of my simple tool. Than I thought "what if I try to make it good this time"... so I bought boracetal (hard composit based on boramid but with 30% of fiberglass) and made some "plugs". Than some precision (and I mean PRECISION) drilling, edges chamfering, making & installing steel pins and my tool was ready. The last step was sand blasting for better grip (boracetal is quite slippery if not blasted). All hand made by me, from raw materials to the final tool. And believe me, this stuff is not easy to drill, it's in fact 30% fiberglass

BTW, I've seen prototypes of the "maintenance tool" from CRK... it will be DIFFERENT LEAGUE! And I'm waiting for mine, of course! But for the time being, well, it's better than nothing. At least it's easy to use and safe for the knife - boracetal will not scratch S30V or Ti. I made couple more as I had to buy at least 1 meter of glass-filled boracetal, and it's not cheap. What do you think?

There are 4 holes in the screw but only 2 pins in the tool ?? Interesting choice of materials ,a great tool for those who HAVE to take things apart .

Well, in fact there are only two choices if you'd like to have the torque distributed evenly around the pivot:
1) VERY VERY VERY precize distribution of 4 pins arount the pivot, which requires CNC
2) precize distribution of 2 pins, which requies caliper and precize drill-press

I don't have CNC and I do have caliper and precize drill-press so my choice was easy in fact. And geometry confirms that two points distributed evenly around the pivot are enough for the job. The torque you need to apply is not that big, you just need to apply it precizely around the pivot.

BTW, made another 3 sets yesterday evening... and one is on the way to our very own Suz :)

I got the idea for mine from your post a few weeks back, and although crude in comparision, it still lines up perfectly and does the job. I'm really considering if I'll get the official tool , unless the kit it comes in is to cool to pass on. Thanks again for the pics and idea.:thumbup::D
