It is to my understanding that theres a TON of differing opinions on here.
And thats a good thing
Theres also some brand prejudices as well.
Not so good.
My take on these brands are as follows (even if i dont necessarily own them) :
Cold Steel (do own)-This knife personally, 10/10. The company in general, 5.5/10
I think that CS is headed in the right direction with the videos, they just need to calm down and stop making useless weapons, and focus on knives and maybe even spears. I REALLY like my cold steel knife, and I think it could be shot from a cannon and still work.
Spyderco (do own)The knife i have (disregarding strange scratches) 9.5/10. The company in general, 10/10.
I like pretty much all Spyderco designs and my Tenacious seems to be built awesomely. I hope to obtain a Delica 4 ffg or something around that price zone soon.
Gerber (do own) My knives, 5.5-6/10. The company in general 3-4/10.
I used to buy Gerber knives alot. The low price and aesthetics used to draw me in. I have an old Gerber knife as well, and its WAY better than the new stuff. They arent very consistent in quality, but i DO see hope for the company. Until then, im no longer a customer.
Strider (dont own)I want one BAD!! I just dont see spending 430 dollars. Yet. As of now, with no ownership, and just opinion, 9/10
Kershaw (do own)Love them. Everything. 10/10 all around
CR (dont own)Im not seeing the need for such an expensive knife with no uniqueness. They seem very normal. I COULD BE WRONG but right now, 7-8/10
Mainly, my point here is that these prejudices arent needed. Every company has potential.
My cousin received a Gerber Mini Paraframe (from me) for $8 on his birthday 5-6 YEARS ago. He just stopped using it because he got a new BUCK knife.
I watched him use that knife for things that would make anyone cringe even for $8 bucks. Prying with the tip, batoning, throwing, scraping, screwdriver (even using the tip for phillips), he threw it at a rock, and submerged it in water, closed it, and put it back in his pocket. No oil, no drying it off. We even did our own heat treatment by making the tip red hot with a butane lighter and dunked it in water twice.
Other than the now-black tip, it has held up EXCEPTIONALLY!! NO RUST EITHER! It is still his favorite knife. I cant believe it.
My grandfather has a Schrade Muskrat. He has pounded it through metal wire with a hammer, and pried with it. Not much limits for him either.
Other than rust in the handle and some play, it also has held up great.
I believe that noone should have prejudices for a company in general. I think that every knife is different, even within the same company.
I LOVE my Cold Steel Mini AK-47. I carry it every day regardless of other peoples opinions.
Does anyone agree here?
Sorry for the long post. Even though its all positive, i still felt like i had to say it.
