It is to my understanding that theres a TON of differing opinions on here.
And thats a good thing :)
Theres also some brand prejudices as well.
Not so good. :(
My take on these brands are as follows (even if i dont necessarily own them) :
Cold Steel (do own)-This knife personally, 10/10. The company in general, 5.5/10
I think that CS is headed in the right direction with the videos, they just need to calm down and stop making useless weapons, and focus on knives and maybe even spears. I REALLY like my cold steel knife, and I think it could be shot from a cannon and still work.
Spyderco (do own)The knife i have (disregarding strange scratches) 9.5/10. The company in general, 10/10.
I like pretty much all Spyderco designs and my Tenacious seems to be built awesomely. I hope to obtain a Delica 4 ffg or something around that price zone soon.
Gerber (do own) My knives, 5.5-6/10. The company in general 3-4/10.
I used to buy Gerber knives alot. The low price and aesthetics used to draw me in. I have an old Gerber knife as well, and its WAY better than the new stuff. They arent very consistent in quality, but i DO see hope for the company. Until then, im no longer a customer.
Strider (dont own)I want one BAD!! I just dont see spending 430 dollars. Yet. As of now, with no ownership, and just opinion, 9/10
Kershaw (do own)Love them. Everything. 10/10 all around
CR (dont own)Im not seeing the need for such an expensive knife with no uniqueness. They seem very normal. I COULD BE WRONG but right now, 7-8/10
Mainly, my point here is that these prejudices arent needed. Every company has potential.
My cousin received a Gerber Mini Paraframe (from me) for $8 on his birthday 5-6 YEARS ago. He just stopped using it because he got a new BUCK knife.
I watched him use that knife for things that would make anyone cringe even for $8 bucks. Prying with the tip, batoning, throwing, scraping, screwdriver (even using the tip for phillips), he threw it at a rock, and submerged it in water, closed it, and put it back in his pocket. No oil, no drying it off. We even did our own heat treatment by making the tip red hot with a butane lighter and dunked it in water twice.
Other than the now-black tip, it has held up EXCEPTIONALLY!! NO RUST EITHER! It is still his favorite knife. I cant believe it.
My grandfather has a Schrade Muskrat. He has pounded it through metal wire with a hammer, and pried with it. Not much limits for him either.
Other than rust in the handle and some play, it also has held up great.
I believe that noone should have prejudices for a company in general. I think that every knife is different, even within the same company.
I LOVE my Cold Steel Mini AK-47. I carry it every day regardless of other peoples opinions.
Does anyone agree here?
Sorry for the long post. Even though its all positive, i still felt like i had to say it.
Thanks for reading,
Bladeboss. :)

I'm not sure I would characterize someone's poor opinion as a prejudice. :) But that point aside, I'm in general agreement with what you said. I tend to see the upside of most makers, vendors and products, and can't really think of any brand that I dislike. Even the cheapy feeling of some SOG knives is ok with me, as with the Flash I. But fortunately we live in an age where there is something for everyone, and I don't really see a need to diss a particular maker. I just buy what I like, and don't buy the rest. Live and let live.

How did that go?
HAHA. It got red hot and then we dunked it in water.
It was more or less a boredom thing, but it worked good before, and so far, it didnt hinder anything at all. Its pretty much the same as it was before. :)

Cold Steel (do own)-This knife personally, 10/10.

The one knife I'm always tempted to buy is the Cold Steel American Lawman. I really like the design and want to try the lock, but I keep hearing how rough the g10 handle is, that basically it's rough enough to ruin your pants. That's always held me back. Wish there was a place local to see it but there's not. Maybe one day I'll just spring for one, we'll see.

(I actually did buy the knife once when I was overseas, but someone at the post office pillaged my package and took all the knives I had ordered except a cheap buck knife! I was so close!)

I did just get my buck Vantage and love it! Great knife!

I kinda agree with everything you said. Honestly i don't dislike Gerber like a lot of people do. They have some designs i like and some designs i don't. I kinda equate 'em with CRKT. The only company that stands out above the rest to me is kershaw. When people ask me for a knife recommendation i feel like i can safely say "buy a kershaw" and feel at ease knowing they'll get a good knife for the money. I guess i could say the same about benchmade but the people that ask me for knife recommendations would laugh in my face if i suggested a company that only has $100+ knives :)

That package situation sounds really annoying!
The G10 is really rough. Ive been carrying it alot and only visible damage, nothing really physical. Mainly just miniature frays and discoloration in the pants pocket-top.
Still, worth it. (may i suggest the one i mentioned?)
:D

I looked at it, but it's just not my thing. To me, personally, it looks too much like a weapon. Looks like it was meant to stab someone.

Yea it was. I was living in India and ordered some knives from the US. I don't remember all of them but I remember I had ordered a CS Pocket Bushman, American Lawman, a Spyderco knife, an RC-4 (now ESEE 4), and a Buck Bantam for a beater knife. Well, when the package arrive it had been opened and re-taped. I opened it to find out the only knife left was the Buck Bantam. Talk about being disappointed! All I know is that there is some Indian postal worker walking around with some really cool knives!

This. There is no need to get upset over someone's personal preference in a knife...

unless they happen to be talking down on your knife :p

Ehhh....
Kinda. It doesnt look as bad in person.
Especially when holding it. The finger grooves obviously arent visible. The only part that looks threatening is the black blade.
And its alot smaller than you may think.
But hey, you can have opinions too!
