Here's the scenario....You have a BK-14 on your hip and a BK-5 sheathed at the campsite for meat and food processing as well as the ocassional hard use because it's the closest thing at hand. You need (or at least want) a 3rd Becker for the chopping, beating, splitting and all around camp use. BK-2 or BK-7? Those are your only two choices.

EDIT: also include a BK-10 as a third option if I could ever find one!!

Shoot! Or should I say chop?

I say a nine its the king, Or you could wait for the machax. But if you have to choose between the 2 or the 7 I say the 2 because that is one hell of a knife. just look at moosez45's thread here.

I also love my 2

Bk10s are easy to find. Call Kabar, they got people good at finding things. Plus since they have some sitting on the shelves they won't have to release the hounds. Since your pretty well rounded already (the bk5 is better at chopping than most think) I'm gonna say a bk9. That way should you run into a giant redwood, you can take it down in one stroke.

BK2 cause you posted "all around camp use" and the shorter blade of the 2 would handle that better. Also it is bulletproof and you can beat on it like it owes you money.

I would go with a BK9 over those two. You have small and medium, now, get The King.

Seriously, in a BK14/BK5/?? situation, the 2 and 7 are going to be on par with what the BK5 should be able to do, so you go the next step, and get a BK9. Now you have some overlap on the trio, and all bases are covered.

Intereresting responses guys. Initially I was leaning BK2 for the reason DerekH stated, plus the length of the blade sorta sits in between the two I have. But now I'm thinking a 9 might be another option I should consider. The BK-9 is a little bigger than I would normally want to carry on my hip, but I suppose I could throw on my super light Seal Pup Elite for that function. My scenario would be 3 night camping trips at the most. We usually just drive up to our spots, so weight and carry isn't that much of issue for this particular need. Thanks for the input so far!

I will throw in the BK-7 simply for the fact the choice is between a 2 & 7 and no one has mentioned it yet. If one one has to prepare wood for fire etc., the BK7 works a little better than the BK 2 in my opinion. It takes less effort to prepare wood for warmth & cooking, plus the advantage if one has to be on the woods a while. If by chance I had to defend myself against wild animals, that includes human, I prefer the longer blade than the BK2, my arm / fist is extended longer for defense. I do agree, the BK is a better chopper. TO make all things equal, I don't think anyone would go wrong with a BK2, or 5 or 7 or 10 or 9. They all have a high level of functionality.

Get a 2 and a 10, In self defense against humans just throw it on the ground, that should knock everybody off their feet within a 1 block radius then while they are dazed go for them with the 10.

Get an axe for chopping beating and splitting. I'll take a short axe over batoning any day unless its just for fun or I am in a real sol situation.

there are a few BK10s left at KaBar. i would prioritize getting one of those now, unless you feel like spending $250-300 on one later later ;)

plus you get micarta in the deal, to play with, use, etc.

the others are not going anywhere for a while.

Micarta comes WITH it? Forgiving me for not knowing. I heard there was a sprint run, but didnt reallt get on here and reseach enough.

micarta and grivory both, and a sheath offering that's a little different. kinda. plus the bells and whistles. the overall treatment is like no other, and likely will not be repeated.

search a little. there be threads. pictures. everything. see FAQ or DB perhaps for links :)

Tumble finish on the flats, micarta, a bell and a whistle, maybe a compass whistle is your lucky. Worth every penny of the 158 it costs

I'd say get the BK-9, if you can a Camillus version, as those are 1/4" thick. You have small and medium covered, might as well get the heavy heavy duty thing :)

Honestly, you have a 5, that' an 8 inch blade. A 9 would not be too far of a leap
I vote 7 though, IMO it's the perfect size. Big enough to get any job done, small enough to not be unwieldy.

Wow, now my thoughts are all over the board. I will have to rule out the BK10 however solely on price. I DO think for what you get with the knife the price is DEFFINATELY justifiable. It's just more than I would care to spend on what I hope will be a beater (on my budget anyway). I love the feel of the 7 in my hand. To me, it just feels exceptionally balanced. I'm not as fond of the feel of the BK2 though I know it is a definate win to own. I think its interesting that and 8" is considered a medium length blade - on a blade forum. :D

Also the 9 is an absolute beast and one I would consider as a large knife. Ultimately I think I'd like them all! But working around my 8"x 3/16" BK5, the 7 and 9 in the same stock width seem like a little redundant. At this point I'm leaning toward a good camp axe and/or a BK5.

IMHO, your secenario is flawed.

Why do you have a BK14 "on your hip" ,anyway? Its a NECK KNIFE...LOL:p

Seriously, I would do the following-

Bk-14(round your neck were it belongs);)

BK- 7 for general purpose use(either one)

Keep the BK -5 sheathed in your pack and in camp. Look at it and wonder why you even brought it along..

Find a Patrol Machete, then you will be ready for the dadgum zombies.

Ooooo..... zombies or no zombies I like this suggestion!

I just hope I (or at least my future children) live long enough to see a Kabar produced Patrol Machete :D

Wait till the Machax comes out and get that. Should be out in a few weeks.
