I bought a serrated Viele recently from a fellow forumite (Ferret) and I just wanted to post up my thoughts on the knife. When I got it out of the box I was pleasantly surprised at its weight. It felt nice and solid due to its stainless steel liners. The micarta slabs that were screwed onto the steel were nice and smooth and felt very comfortable to grip.
The blade itself is AUS8A and has a deep hollow grind and the knife that I bought was a serrated version with the usual aggressive Spyderedge. The Spyderhole is fairly small, the same size as on the Wegner Jr and is slightly recessed into the handle when the blade is closed. Consequently the blade looks very svelt without too big a hump or ramp. There are 3 small holes next to the Spyderhole and these are the Viele trademark and they look very cool indeed - visible when closed! The blade is also stamped with Vieles Japanese God of War symbol and I think this adds more sophistication to the look of the knife.
What is the action like? Well I have to admit that out of all my Spydercos (inc Wegner Jr, Military, Starmate and Merlin), its my favourite. It has a liner lock that has a really smooth action and has a really solid sound when it locks open. Even nicer, in my opinion than the Wegner Jr or Military (Im sure that mny of you will disagree on that one)! Once locked, the blade is solid and there is practically no movement at all.
The clip if mounted very close to the pivot edge of the handle so that it is tip down and once clipped into a pocket it is very discreet. Very much like a BM Stryker. Pinching the Spyderhole between my thumb and first finger, it is very easy to draw the knife and flick the blade open.
My Viele is a numbered model and is for my collection so I have not used it to do any cutting but I am confident that the Spyderedge will have its wicked way with any thick cardboard or rope as with other serrated edged Sypdercos.
In conclusion, the Viele is a wonderful knife. It feels very comfortable in the hand, is relatively slim, has a beautifully smooth action and is solid once locked out.
Overall, the knife really surprised me. I havent seen many Spydercos at first hand let alone handled them most of my buying is over the internet so I have to say that the knife is a lot better than the photos of it suggest. If I had to change anything about the knife, I would add a little choil for my first finger for a little added security - other than that, the Viele is outstanding.
If anyone is thinking of getting one, I would recommend it. Now it brings me to my question .anyone have a good condition plain edged Viele that is looking for a new home?Cheers
Ken
