I just brought home what is perhaps one of the neatest small knives on the market, a Buck Short Revolution and thought I'd share my impressions of this little.....folding fixed blade.

I always liked the design of the Buck Revolution XT and thought it was a very cool concept to have a sheathless fixed blade, but I never bought one because I didn't want a knife of this type with serrations. Don't get me wrong, serrations are quite useful in an outdoor knife, but I prefer plain edges for overall utility. I have to say it was nice to see another collaboration with Peter Whittaker, this time a smaller and a more utilitarian version called the Short Revolution.
The Short Revolution is available in partially serrated edges and a variety of colors, but the model I bought is the 436DPLT which seems to be the only one that comes in a plain edge configuration. It's aluminum scales/handle come in a nice platinum color and the 420HC drop point blade measures about 2.5 inches from the handle. The revolving action of this folding fixed blade is very smooth and locks in the open and closed position with no wobble in any direction. When open, it resembles a folding knife more than a fixed blade, but it's appearance is deceiving because the tang of the blade is enclosed within the handle making it a literal fixed blade. To enclose the blade in the handle, you press the button in the handle and rotate it into the handle until it locks in place. When in the closed position, the exposed tang reveals a carabiner-type clasp that can be used to attach the knife to a belt loop, backpack or wherever you choose to carry it. It's small size (6 inches closed) makes it easy to carry and it goes unnoticed until you need it.
Just like the larger Revolution XT, there is absolutely no way that this knife can close accidentally while in use and thus is one of the safest knives on the market, IMO. Because the handle serves as the knife's sheath, there is no need to fumble around with straps. It is indeed a pleasure to carry and use this little knife and I like everything about it, although I can only think of 2 minor upgrades that would improve it's appeal for me. First would be to incorporate a lanyard hole at the butt end of the aluminum handles/scales and the second would be to use a type III HA coating on the handle to keep the scratch marks to a minimum. Overall, it's a superb little knife that can come in handy out in the field or out and about in town. It's sharp, cool looking and very safe (for those who don't like folders). Best of all it's MADE IN THE USA!!!
