Hey everyone!
I posted a different thread asking for opinions on an duty/EDC multi-tool and I decided on the Leatherman MUT. Here are my thoughts:
EDIT: I got pics!
First Impression:
Opening up the package was tougher than any other blister pack I have encountered...if the packaging is any indication of how tough the tool is, I'll be set. The tool out of the package felt hefty and substantial...in a good way. It seemed durable and up to some hard use. The first thing I noticed was the black coating rubbing off on my hands, but I heard that is a problem with all black coated Leatherman tools. The tool was very difficult to open and close, but I'm sure I can fix that with a torx wrench. Overall the fit and finish seem pretty good and the tool seems well built.
Blade and Saw:
The saw seems like a standard multi-tool saw, so not much to say about that...I probably won't use the saw too much anyway. The knife blade is where my hopes were really high for this tool. I read on other reviews that the blade was sturdy and had a good thickness. These were both true, but the lockup left a bit to be desired. There is no blade play side to site, but there is a slight vertical play. The liner lock locks up late, almost to the other side. I'm just not sure if this knife will last the lifetime of the tool (if anyone has an input on this, feel free to give your experience). The blade is plenty sharp and will work well for most tasks, I believe.
Pliers:
The pliers are on par with other Leatherman pliers. They feel very strong and I really like the ability to replace the cutters without sending the tool in to Leatherman. For me, the pliers are the right size to handle anything I may need pliers for, from fine work to bigger tasks like loosening nuts and bolts. Not much else to say about the pliers...
Other tools:
The carbon scraper, bit drivers, pin punch, carabiner, bottle opener, hammer, and strap cutter are all pretty useful. The hammer and strap cutter will be pretty useful in case I'm first on the scene to a trapped victim, which is perfect for my line of work. The bit drivers are all pretty common sizes for firearms and other household chores; the options seem to cover most bases, and the rest are available from Leatherman. The bit driver on the end of the handle also acts as a decent safety block for the strap cutter. The carbon scraper, punch, and cleaning rod attachments will prove pretty useful at the range, but I have yet to try them. The carabiner and bottle opener are pretty standard...
Overall impressions:
Despite the black coating coming off on my hands, I am impressed with the fit and finish of this tool. Apart from the knife, I feel like this tool will last a lifetime. The tools seem like they will be very useful both on and off duty. The size of the tool, while larger than most, still carries nicely in the pocket due to the pocket clip, but also has a really nice molle sheath with it. I also really like the inclusion of a little lock switch to hold the tool closed when not using the sheath.
Well, my cat is trying to help me type, so I think I will wrap it up! This is my first review, so I apologize if it is sub-par. Please feel free to add your own experiences!
