My Ti Scale Is Too Slick

And I could use some suggestions.

Hi all, I bought a user large Insingo recently that a previous owner had scotchbrited the scales. I loved the way it looked and felt until I started to carry the knife. It slips in my hand and falls out of my pocket. I love the knife other than that, so I don't want to sell it. I'm in the sandbox, so don't really want to mail it to the mothership for reblasting. Any other suggestions for me?

Thanks

Get someone to send you some skateboard tape? A strip stuck to each side would do the trick. Beyond that, I'm not sure what you do.

Lone_Wolf- You can give it a rough stonewash finish. The benefits are it hides wear and gives the surface a texture and you can do it yourself even in the sandbox.

Take the scales to a local machine shop...Automotive or otherwise..They will likely blast it for little to nothing. If you were in my area, I would do it for nothing :)
Hrmmm...Looking at your location. It may not be feasible?

That's a great idea for now. I'm sure I can order that online easy enough.

Not feasable here, but when I get back to the States it will be. Thanks for the suggestion.

I like this idea. How do I do that myself?

pm me and i'll send you a piece of grip tape (skateboard grip) this stuff is usually sold in 11" x 48" or in packs of squares 11" X 11". i have a piece and will gladly send you enough for your knife

Also I would be glad to send you some grey rubberized no slip tape, have some 1" wide that would do the trick. Send me your address by PM or to lapopular@aol.com, and thanks for your service.

Take knife appart. Put tape covering pivot area and lock bar. Put in a container (plastic) with rocks and drop plastic bottle in the washer or dryer
 not kidding-

That's really nice of both of you to offer, I sent each an email. I'll see which one feels better in the hand. And Mike, you're very welcome.

Thanks to both of you.

Great idea, thanks! Between the tapes being sent here and this suggestion I'm not sure which I'll end up doing, but I know now I won't end up slinging an otherwise great knife against a wall in frustration. I'm tempted to do this to the blade, too. BTW, here's the knife you guys are helping me fix up.

You're in the sandbox and don't know where to get it sandblasted? Hang it outside when it gets a bit windy.
I wouls have also suggested heat anodising with a gas torch. Not only do you get that famous rainbow colour change that Ti is known for, but it changes the surface sheen and gives you more traction. It does mean though, that if you don't like it you'll have to sand it back to grey.

BBW has it correct. I coat the rocks with WD40 because I have found it evens out the finish.

Here is a picture of a stonewashed and oxidized scale with matching thumb stud I call this finish Ordinance. I know your across the world but your deployment is on the front end I will be happy to do the scales for you like below and ship them back for no charge.

Hahaha, that's funny. The idea might actually work if I was in Iraq and it was sandstorm season, but right now it's rainy season. All I'd get for hanging them out would be clean scales. :D

As for the heart torch idea, I'd probably want to let someone who knows what they're doing tackle that. No telling what they'd look like if I did it. :o

Wow, that's awesome! And the name of the finist is perfect. :D So what do I do to take you up on this?

When you get back, here's a more permanent solution. I've done several for the knife community here and abroad.

Until then, the skateboard trick will work temporarily.
