I don't think I have made a knife in over a year, so figured it was about time to do one up. The only major design parameters I wanted was for it to have a tanto blade shape and to work well in a tool pocket on work pants/coveralls.

Well, here is the first Tool Pocket Knife I have ever seen.:D Kelly Cupples 1080 with a vinegar patina, saddle stitched welt style flat pocket sheath with rough back to help keep it in the pocket. I couldn't bring myself to use the rough out on the front too.:barf::D

Thanks for looking, and any comments/criticism welcome.

Thanks.

Very nice! Blade looks great and the sheath turned out really nice. Your stitching looks nice and clean. I bought a Speedy Stitcher leather awl a while back to repair a popped seam on a leather couch we have. I assume it might work well to stitch a sheath as well.......

If you repaired the couch, you know more about the speedy-stitcher than I do...:D I just glue and drill the leather, then use two needles to saddle stitch it. I think after an hour or two of stitching, the speedy part sounds really attractive though...:D

Here is a link to one right here:

I haven't tried or looked into it, so I don't know how it will adapt to sheath making, but this little tool and some heavy duty waxed thread really allowed me to do a professional looking job on my couch seem with no prior experience or training whatsoever, so maybe it's worth a look.....

A speedy stitcher works OK but once you get it figured out the two needles to saddle stitch works just as fast for me anyhow. To me a speedy stitcher is a PITA.

OK here is the tutorial that got me started and once you figure it out the rest is just practice, practice, and practice.
Once you look at this tutorial you will understand that if you break a stitch using this method it doesn't all unravel. That is the great thing about this system of stitching!

Very well thought out blade. Designed to fit in a specially designed (common) pocket. You just need a lanyard for it to extract easily. Great idea.

Thanks for the nice comments.

It would be easier to grab with a lanyard, but it seems to be OK without it as well. Thanks for the nice words.

It does seem to resheath easily, which I was hoping for with the sheath design, and the welt keeps you from having any worry about damaging the threads.

I have one more small change I would like to make, but I will work with it for a while longer to see if there are any more to do at the same time.
