To avoid gaps between handleslaps and tang I use carton or very thick paper between the two. It gives a better bond to the epoxy too.
To easy up things I start of gluing the paper to the slabs and let the epoxy set. Then I shape the handle and attach to the tang
This material works better than the usually linermaterial since the paper while absorb uneven spots better

One other tip along these lines is to not clamp too tightly, this will squeeze most of the epoxy out and it will not be a very good bond.

One other tip. A few years ago, when I first contracted the disease of knifemaking, I did a blade and put water buffalo on it. I used C-clamps to clamp on the scales. "Hey, lets crank this baby down! The tighter the better." The next day when I started to finish out the handle, I had nice little dimples or circles where the clamps were. I now use the spring clamps.

I use 5-8 wisegrip tongs on a handle. Good thing is you can adjust the tension. Good thing if you see space between handle and tang. To soften up the grip I put litle pieces of Kydexscrap between the handle material and the wises. Then you dont glue the wises to the handle either.
