Here's some shots of my modified Trail Hawk : (this is my first time linking pictures, so I apologize in advance if I screw it up)

I cut the handle down then rebuilt it out of walnut, maple, and some vulcanized spacer material I had.

Thanks to all of you for the inspiration for this project.

I surely would appreciate any feedback.

Im affraid im going to see bigger pics. I cant quite see the detail of the carbon atoms that make up the head.
Just razzin ya.

Seriously though, that handle looks SWEET!
What did you wrap the upper part of the handle in??

The handle looks nice but I'm wondering what is holding the pieces together ?? Epoxy ?? Will it stand up to chopping and throwing ??

Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Yeah, I apologize for the size of the pictures, I was going to use the electron microscope up at Cornell but didn't feel like making the drive!!
(I appreciate a good, well deserved razzin!!)

The handle is wrapped with 2mm leather lace I found at AC Moore.

There's a 3/8 inch threaded rod that runs through the length of the handle. When I cut the handle down I drilled the hole, epoxied the rod in place then glued each piece of walnut and tightened them down with a nut and washer.
I won't be throwing this one, but I'm confident it will hold up to chopping and general use.

I appreciate all the nice comments, guys.
Especially yours, Vec, because I'm such an admirer of your work.

I'm thinking about trying a stacked leather handle next or maybe some of the exotic hardwoods like bocote or zebra wood.

Where are you guys buying your trailhawks? I have found them but they have been sold out when I find them.

Try Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Their site says they have them, plus they have free ground shipping.

I just got a Rifleman's Hawk from them on Tuesday.

How do you like the Riflemans hawk?

I just bought a Trail Hawk and you cannot beat the price, I looked around and 24 w/o shipping is about as cheap as I can find. I found a few at 19 but with 10 dollars shipping or so. THANKS!

Sure, no problem. They always nail you on the shipping, don't they?!

This is actually my second Rifleman's Hawk. I cut the poll off my last one (one of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" situations!) I realy like them, though. Appearance wise, they resemble that traditional pipe hawk configuration which I like and they are built like tanks, very solid. They throw pretty well, too. They are significantly larger and heavier that the Trail Hawk which makes them, I think, a better chopper.
Overall, for the price, you really can't go wrong and they are a lot of fun to customize.

Not sure what I'm going to do with this one yet. I really like Lonnie Hansen's work and he has some amazing pieces with Bocote handles. I might try that or I'm still kicking around the idea of the stacked leather look to match my Fallkniven Thor!

Good luck with your Trail Hawk and keep us posted on your progress.
