Well, Wednesday was my wife and I anniversary. We had reservations to a japanese restraunt, one of those where they cook the food at your table. The chef was one of the best I had ever seen at one of those places, the things he did with his knives were incredible (hate to get in a knife fight with him
smile.gif
) Anyways, afterwards we went to local mall with a knife store. They carry other stuff, but have a fair selection of knives. The salesman didnt know a alot about knives, but he made an effort and was extremely helpful about letting me handle all the good stuff. Anyways, I ended up with 2 swiss army knives(victorinox)...1 is a classic with clear blue handles and a built in light and retractable ball point pen. The other is a Tinker model with clear grey handles...first one of those I had seen. 3rd knife was a CRKT stiff kiss. It looks like a wharncliffe, only the spine is straight and not the edge (what do ya call that style?). Anyways, they were typical mall prices, but my wife agrees with me, we had the salesman helping us for about 30 minutes, and he did his best and deserved the sale...so he got it.
End of babbling.

UPDATED and REVISED

Hi Richard...

A mall close to where we have been spending our weekends all summer has a knife store in it as well...

Man did I have some SERIOUS sticker shock where I seen the prices.

CRKT KFF - $100.00CDN
BM Nim Cub - $233.00CDN

OMG,, I couldn't believe it.. I Don't know how the guy can make enough money to pay the rent each month..

Theres Very few people i know personally that would spend $100.00 on a knife let alone $200.00+ on a factory blade..

One could with enough looking find a decent custom knife for $200.00CDN

For the most part the guy was Very friendly, not overly up on his knives,, but then again I'm not by any means an expert on knives. It's just nice to actually find a dealer that knows more about knives than you do..

I think that's the one they call their MDP, Modified Drop Point.

$100CDN is still alot of $, like $70US I think. Most mall stores sell stuff really overpriced, but sometimes you can nail a pretty good bargain... maybe...

The best bargains not on the internet that I've seen is at flea market style gatherings if (1) you don't mind touching up what you buy and if (2) you know what you're looking for; and also at small collector-oriented shops. The guy I sometimes frequent in Flushing, NY sold me a Gerber SLG for like $45 w/o tax -- very comparable to an internet buy and I didn't have to pay shipping or wait.

He also had some manual SOCOMs with a blade shape different from the production ones -- more angular like a tanto. I think he said that Michael Walker had a problem with that particular design (like it was a knock off of something he designed?) and only a few of them were made. I wasn't really paying attention to him though.

Here is my recent rude awakening.

I was on a Business trip to southern Alberta last week. I stopped in at a few stores looking for a Cold Steel Trail Master. I have seen this knife on the net starting at about 137 US and on up. The first store, which actually had more knives in one place then I had ever seen, quoted me 299. I thought this was a tad high (no pun) but I am finding that this is not bad. Two other knife shops quoted me 457 and 550. Now the trail master is a decent knife but not at that price. I was offered a battle mistress at not much more then that. I am confused to say the least.

FYI 1 canadian dollar = about 67 cents US

Thanks for letting me rant

I think some of the worst prices are at the HOUSE OF KNIVES chains across Canada. I say to them, "C'mon, and throw a sale once in awhile will ya!"

Talk about brutal prices!

Here is a sample of the difference in what Canadians have to pay, out of our hard earned paychecks, for that shiny new Spyderco knife we want (from S&R Knives). Oh yeah, and we have this ludicrous tax beyond provincial tax called the GST:

Not that I really want to defend House Of Knives or anything, but I managed to pick up my Gerber A/F for $110 + txs there (Grand Re-opening sale kinda thing, their regular price on this knife is $230

). Them's Canadian dollars, so compared with US prices I've seen ($90-$110), I thought I did Ok.

As new as I am to 'knifing' I've found that I still seem to know more about the products they carry than their staff does.

Maybe they're operating under the assumption that good product will sell itself?

Yeah, well, people ... They're in tiny pieces in my bag ...

Richard,
That shows what a decent guy you are. If I worked in a knife shop and saw you come in with your knowledge, I'd be a tad nervous and would just give you the knives.....lol.
