It depends on what you want to do and if you prefer high tech tactical or traditional wood and metal. For a high tech tactical hawk the top of the heap is the Next Generation Ranger which has a black acetel handle (16") and a black Parkerized tool steel head. Awsome hawk (and the only one I don't have in my collection -- yet). For high tech but more traditional style there is the Vietnam Tactical. It has a slightly shorter acetel handle (14") and the classic Vietnam tomahawk black Tex-Coated head. For traditional wood and metal the Rogers' Rangers spike tomahawk is the way to go. Hickory handle with a hand-forge finish head. I got mine with the mirror polished perimiters and hooking edge. This is a fantastic tool that looks good and is well worth the price. Enjoy your new hawk, whichever one you get.

Sadly, I'm still debating which hawk is to be the "official" hawk of the Pinenuts. And I've narrowed it down to the VNtac, The Brend fighting hatchet, and ranger spike.

All tough and battle proven!!;)

Do you play with the ones you have much?
I use my Brend hatchet and Rodgers' Rangers spike hawk quite a bit (for chopping stuff). I haven't done much tossing with my hawks due to the lack of suitable facilities at my previous residence. Now that I'm moved I'm working on setting up a tomahawk throwing range. What little tomahawk tossing I've done was a *LOT* of fun :D.

I used my Brend extensively (and exclusively) while in Iraq and Kuwait. Did everything from breaking locks to popping tires (took a few whacks, but got through!:D) The Brend is an excellent tool. For the price (under a 100 bones!) you can't go wrong! And it is nigh unbreakable...
Using a basic sharpening steel, she hones up real good too!
just my $2.67 worth

I've been promising to call ATC for the closeout sheaths they were looking to offer...and I wanted to buy a couple of them, because I'd figure I'd get several..
and because I wasn't able to to make the call I thought I'd leave a message.....
Well lo and behold, Suzanne picked up the phone....much as Andy picked up the phone when I called at really off hours....

So, I got a VN tactical to go with the sheaths I was planning on ordering, put in an order for a Brend, and an order for an NG Spike hawk.....I was so excited, I missed asking Suzanne about carry systems for the other 2 'hawks....VN hawk is covered, what do you folks tink match with the Brend and NG Spike.....especially the RR Spike....
Thanks,
Steve

I'm interested in hearing about carry options for the Brend Hatchet too. How is the sheath that comes with it? Should I be thinking about getting a custom sheath from someone instead?

Had I not forgotten the London Bridge carry system for the Brend, I probably would have used it, however, since I had Robert at Survival Sheaths make me an underarm carry system for the Brend out of concealex, I used it and it worked better than I ever expected...until I had to put on all my gear! :(

After testing it out with and w/o gear, I modified the sheath to work BOTH ways: taking the vest type carry system off and, using a web belt (rifle slings works well too!, I made a baldric style carry system using the concealex sheath.

This worked better than anything imaginable!

Easy to put on and take off, it allowed easy access to the Brend and rapid deployement of the tool as well...
Couldn't have asked for a better sheath or carry system.

The Survival sheaths are well made and I am having Robert make me a concealex sheath for my custom lance hawk too (can't wait to see that! :D) Robert makes no nonsense sheaths and can include all the bells and whistles...or none at all- depends on your desire!
I highly recommend the baldric style (use 2" straps!) if you will wear it OVER gear (flak vest, duece gear) otherwise you have a few other options too...
contact Robert here: www.survivalsheath.com/flash.htm
I recommend him for a custom concealex sheath...:D
Leather, I have no idea...

What is the London Bridge carry system?

The London Bridge Company is the one who makes the factory sheath for the Brend. It is a cordura sheath and is well suited for wear on a duty belt. Since I didn't have it, I couldn't use it...but it is a fairly decent sheath.
I like the sheath for the VTT better...

I recommend, if you will be carrying it for any extended amounts of time, buy a baldric type sheath from Survival Sheaths.

Also, Survial Sheath Systems makes a kydex sheath for the Brend which you can have Rob add to a shoulder rig and customize with another sheath on the other side. They're comfortable, well-built and the best that money can buy.

A shoulder rig sounds nice, but I'm going to see how I do with the factory sheath first. :)

Thanks!
