I wanted to know what you guys thought, if this was the norm with crk customer support, Bout 2months ago I bought my first crk knife a Umnumzaan cause I liked the over all looks.

3weeks after owning it im havin problems opening it, isnt smooth, awkward action, so I email crk, Heather tells me to lube it, and the correction thumb placement to open it well, well did all that, didnt help, over time it got better tho, or my thumb just got numb, developed a good size callus. I decide to keep it past the return date cause I liked it to much.

A month later I send another email cause im still havin trouble opening it, was told to I was opening it wrong and to sell it on forums if i was unhappy with it, no send it in, no help really, just bascily its my fault, ive been playin with knives since I was little so I thought ok....

So now I notice the Umnum doesnt lock up as tight, it has zero blade play tho and locks up appearing a perfect 70%,

I edc the Zaan inbetween my Spydercos and Busses, cause I feel well that locks not gonna fail with my hand over the bar, but still you wonder.

So im just wondering if any one else got told to go sell a knife you was havin probs with by CRK, its left me a lil  Ive since purchased a small seb 21 and enjoy it.

reviews of the umnum have been fairly mixed here, so i cant say im terribly surprised at the problems you had.

i am surprised that crk would respond that way. that is certainly atypical, and has not been my experience with their cs.

You did keep it past the return date, so I am sure they would stick to their policy on that.

I am surprised they said that if they did, its certainly not like them and certainly not like Heather as I have delt with her Many times.

The zaan does open differntly than the sebbie. When opening it, instead of pushing up and out, try pushing the lug towards the blade, for me it opens up much smoother that way. On mine, I have the tension on the pivot bushing set where I can rotate it when its closed. At times, mine will be tighter than normal, so I just rotate the pivot 1/4 turn, it will either make it tighter or looser. This in no way causes blade play, but it will make it easier to open. I have not taken mine apart since I got the take down kit around xmas and its still going strong.

I find it hard to believe if the lock is engaged 70%, the lock will fail with a spine wack on the hand ( 20% yes, 70% no )
If this IS the case, by ALL Means send it to CRK, it needs looked at.

Well its new and hasn't been used much cept for carrying, I say new but the card I got with it says its a year and a half old, Its past 60% for sure, can tell its over half the blade tang when locked up, I dont mind it closing like that aslong as it doesnt when my hand is over it you know lol,

I wasn't to surprised with the the response I got on to just sell it, I did say I was dissatisfied tho and thought they might wanna inspect it, not like I wanted to fork out more money at the time so I didn't suggest it

I have bugged Heather with the dumbest of questions incsentantly when I was newer to knives and I have never even gotten anything close to a rude response. Question after question after question she always ended her replies with "Please let me know if I can help you any further or if you have any more question.". Were you ranting and raving or something? That doesn't sound like the Heather I know.

Whenever I had any kind of problem I always sent my knife in per their request and they've always made it right even when I was at fault in damaging the knife by letting someone mod it.

Nah no ranting or raving, I was kind and so was she, I just said I was wasnt satisfied with it basicly and wasnt sure what I could do with it, they didnt offer for me to send it in so I didnt ask, course none of this was about the lock, my emails were purely about the opening.

I agree with you 100%........I have sent countless emailes to Heather when I was putting my CRK Timeline together, asking about custom engraving when getting my NCIS sebbie done, and just questions in general and she has been Absolutely Awsome. Anytime I call, I ask fo her pesonally. She is by a landslide the BEST Customer Sevice I Have EVER Delt With :thumbup:

The two issues you mentioned both sound like warranty problems. Did you mention the lock failure?

PS I agree about Heather. Heather is my favorite person in knife CS for any company. I always ask for her by name. Not that the others there are bad she's just the one I have dealt with from day one and it's always been a pleasure.

If you have a issue, send it back and have CRK check it out....if there's a problem with the knife they will fix it...thats all there is to it !!

Thanks I definitely dont want to sell it so I might ask about sendin it in over the lock.

ok, that makes more sense.

be sure to mention the lock failure. i have a sebenza that still locks up at about 20%, and ive had it over a year, iirc. no lock failures, and i routinely give it a tap on my palm or shoe heel since the lock up is so early.

the comment to sell appears to just be a response to your dissatisfaction with your ability to open it smoothly. its not like they can do anything except lube the parts with regard to that issue.

Don't think I would like hearing this from anyone, let alone CRK.
Any knife I sell, I offer a 100% MBG, no questions.

Never had one returned, and I've sold a bunch..

Too much controversy on this model.

Hi

When you bought the knife 2 months ago, did you get it directly from Chris Reeve Knives or from one of their Authorized Dealers?

Regards, Neil

Did you try to return it to 1 Stop? I believe they have a 30 day return policy.
I kept it past 30days cause I thought it would ease up without having to return or buy a tool. When I seen the old date I thought....what, but Heather said they dont go "stale". Tho when I sent the email on my troubles opening it I had only had it 3weeks.

Wow! I think if I spent that much on a knife and I had 30 days to determine if I wanted to keep it I would have made the swap much earlier.

Well sorry for your troubles but if you send it in for the two problems you've mentioned I'm sure they'll fix them. Unless the tightness of opening is within their specs that is.

I think that you should send it in to get the lock fixed. However, it sounds like you arent very happy with it beyond the lock problem. In that case, i would probably just take the advice you were given and sell it. No real point to keep such an expensive knife that you dont enjoy using. It is possible that for your hand, the ergonomics are not well suited. No knife can fit every person perfectly, even if it is a chris reeve:)

Take care, and I hope things work out for ya
