Hey all. Went to Genesse Country Musuem over in the Rochester area this past weekend. The place is a working town as it was in the previous century. They had everything there from outhouses to government stuff

Went to the Blacksmith shop and saw a full shop (I'll post pictures as soon as I can get them scaned). Real big bellow to supply air. Talked to him a bit on hardening methods of the time and he said that they had used water a lot. I was wondering.....I recall my experiences with a blacksmith in Montanna and he forged some steel for a knife a bit and dumped it in water.....just hit it gently on the anvil and it shattered! Well if they used water.. then things should be shattering...hmmm ....mentioned it to him and he said that it realy depends on what you are doing.....

Was just sitting here thinking about something... this guy had a lot of hammers. They appeared to be all different too.... must have been about 30ish.... could have been just for show I understand..... how many do you guys use on average?

I have a set of hammers like, golfers have golf clubs, I do most of my work with two hammers but there are times when different weights and styles come in handy.
I'm always on the lookout for hammers at flea markets and garage sales, the ones with no handle are my favorites, I usually get them for .25 to .50
