Hello all, I recently visited my 'neighbor', Mr. John Powell and his kukri collection part of which can be seen at the Khukri FAQ.

I brought along my 20" Villager Sirupati, Filipino Talibon, Indian-Persian Buckler (short hand shield), and junk talwar/tarwar.

We talked, I learned a lot, and that sums it up.

I admit the standard 15" Sirupati has a nice feel and is quite light and Cold Steel Kukri has an odd evenness about it and pictures on the Net do not do it justice however, I'm not trading my Villager for one. The 9" kukris were more tempting than before.

BTW, does anyone have footage of the Buckler and Kukri demonstration done by the Indian or Middle Eastern armies?
I often play with the buckler and sword against my instructor and have made a dent in it and just want more related footage I can train to.

To Mr. Powell, thank you for the visit and I think a buckler would look good on your desk.

To answer your question, publicly practicing with real swords in the city is prohibited unless it's Tai Chi which allows no or minimal contact and often with simulated swords. Kendo practitioners were kicked out of the Pandhandle area of Golden Gate Park via citizen complaints of 'terrorism'.

This was told to me by the police who told my teachers and myself not to bring out real swords and practice.

Smoke,
It was my pleasure to have you visit and see the collection.
I'm glad you heard something of the history I have dug up.

Sonam is the Gurkha brat ( he has I hope been over here long enough to know that the term Army, Navy, or Military brat is a term used familiarly between friends, and though not a respectful term it is certainly not intended disrespectfully). He's the one to ask, but the bucklers used were I believe, plywood. Can't hurt to ask.

Drat! meant to ask where and what kind of bucklers you used and where you got it. Been meaning to get one for myself.

Harrassment in this forum will not be reported. It will, however, be graded.

Rusty, I got my buckler from a private dealer. India, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Africa all have bucklers. Mine is Indian-Persian Brass.

Now for $45 at http://www.by-the-sword.com you can get a buckler of gauge steel to bang on. I might get one myself. Or risk bid wars for Scottish Targets at Ebay.

The www.haca.com has some great sources for usage. My instructor and previous happened to like various weapons from all over the world and researched their use and let me in on a few things. I have some footage of sword (talwar) and buckler and just want the kukri and buckler demo.

Thanks for links, Smoke.

Sonam is just back from a journey to Sikkim where he visited family and friends. He is playing catch up at work but I'm sure he will be around soon and can help us out with his first hand experience with Gorkhas, bucklers, and just about everything else. He is a great source.
