Hello all, I recently visited my 'neighbor', Mr. John Powell and his kukri collection part of which can be seen at the Khukri FAQ.
I brought along my 20" Villager Sirupati, Filipino Talibon, Indian-Persian Buckler (short hand shield), and junk talwar/tarwar.
We talked, I learned a lot, and that sums it up.
I admit the standard 15" Sirupati has a nice feel and is quite light and Cold Steel Kukri has an odd evenness about it and pictures on the Net do not do it justice however, I'm not trading my Villager for one. The 9" kukris were more tempting than before.
BTW, does anyone have footage of the Buckler and Kukri demonstration done by the Indian or Middle Eastern armies?
I often play with the buckler and sword against my instructor and have made a dent in it and just want more related footage I can train to.
To Mr. Powell, thank you for the visit and I think a buckler would look good on your desk.
To answer your question, publicly practicing with real swords in the city is prohibited unless it's Tai Chi which allows no or minimal contact and often with simulated swords. Kendo practitioners were kicked out of the Pandhandle area of Golden Gate Park via citizen complaints of 'terrorism'.
This was told to me by the police who told my teachers and myself not to bring out real swords and practice.
