My Visit to the Spyderco Outlet

I just returned from an excellent trip to Colorado, and I made a point to stop by the Spyderco Outlet.

I held a lot of knives that I was curious about, and my assumptions about certain knives were WAY off. It was great to hold all of the models I've seen online, including the Chaparrals done in titanium, the Gayle Bradley in M4, the Military variants, etc. I was told not to take pictures so close that it would include pricing, so I've chosen not to include some of my close-up photos.

My wife-to-be asked one of the employees in the Outlet why she had a gold Spyderco pin, and she said, "Because I am an owner of the company." It was Gail Glesser, Sal's wife. She pulled out a special 9/11 edition knife and accidentally cut the display case with it. She told us, "See, our knives are damn sharp!"

After talking with Gail for awhile, she explained that she was a firefighter, and she lost a friend in 9/11. They pulled steel from directly above where the hero was lost and used the steel to make inlays for 2000 limited edition knives. The inlays are outlets of the skyline that had the Twin Towers. Gail gave me two of the original steel pieces that the inlays were cut from, and it was more valuable to me than any knife I could have purchased that day.

Overall, the Outlet was a fantastic experience. My Spyderco wishlist is now different (and much longer) than it was before. I also had a chance to see all of the thank you letters from service men/women that have used Spyderco's products in the field - heartwarming to say the least.

I now have more respect for Spyderco than ever before, and I am making plans to move to Colorado. 300 days of Sun, no humidity, and no mosquito problem? I'd take that over Minnesota any day. :)

Anyone else have experiences with the Outlet or it's employees to share? Any service people that have experiences with using Spyderco products in the field?

Alex, that is a great story. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. Spyderco owners and staff are among the nicest, most patient, and humble around. That is one reason among many that they have such a strong following, people like to be around positivity and they are all about it.

The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, too. Regardless of the question I had, there was an informative answer on the other side of the counter. It's a helluva lot better than asking a bartender about the microbrews on tap, only to hear "I'm not really a beer person, but I've heard good things." :)

I'm glad I live so close to such a great company.

You're very lucky. I'd be at Spyderco very often if I were you.

I see you're in Fort Collins. That city is incredibly beautiful and well laid out. We plan on moving to Loveland. They only have 6 breweries to your ~27. :grumpy:

Great story. I went for the first time last month. I've lived 30 minutes away for 5 years and never knew they had a B&M outlet until recently. When I was there everybody was super friendly and helpful and I picked up a few new blades after handling them. If you're a spydie fan and you get the opportunity to check it out its worth it.

Not surprised in the least by your experience. Kind of what I've come to expect from Sal and family (in my limited experience). Cool story none the less.

Do you have pictures of what you picked up? This thread doesn't have enough Spydie porn. :)

My mom lives on the western slope, but I've passed through Denver many times on my way there. I hope to stop next time I go through... possibly next spring.

You will love living in Colorado. Nice write-up on spyderco. It is really a great place to put your hands on a lot of great knives!

I need to make this trip, however I can't afford to make it just to hit up the Spyderco Outlet. If I plan a trip to Colorado, what are some of the other "must see/must do's" in the Golden/Denver area, as well as the Colorado Springs area? Both well known attractions and lesser known places would be appreciated

Golden has the Coors brewery. Colorado Springs has Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods which are both must see. Also worth a drive to Estes park and Rocky Mountain National parks.
