I got the chance to spend a weekend with Dale Baxter, JS. I've never had the chance to work with a "trained" bladesmith before, so when Dale offered I jumped at the opportunity. Dale had a commitment to a "trade day" show as a demonstrator but with our tangled schedules we had to make this a go. Dale somehow worked my bumbling hands into the demo.
I learned to forge a tang, sounds funny, but I'd never actually seen it done and it drove me crazy trying to learn.
I learned a different hammering technique that gave me a better finish and I think will give my customers a better knife.
I learned to to deal with customers at the table. Watching Dale's wife Miss Stephanie should be a mandatory ABS class for anyone wanting to learn how to sell knives at a show. I learned there's a lot more to knifemaking than making knives.
I learned a lot about the relationship between a student/teacher in the apprentice setting.
I learned a lot more, but waiting for the epiphanies when they make sense.
Dale is a truly gifted bladesmith who take time out of his busy schedule to work with a schmo like me. I am truly honored that he spent any time much less the whole weekend to teach me.
Thanks Dale, you and Miss Stephanie are good people.
