Folks,

Well, my Wegner Jr. is on the way! Thanks to all of you who provided advice about this knife and pictures (Thanks Chinook). I truly do think that for a lot of circumstances, this may end up being my favorite EDC. I adore my large Wegner, and if the Jr. handles like it does then I’ll have a slightly more discreet model with the same dynamite feature set. I had a friend buy the knife for me in a neighboring city, and will visit at the end of the month to deliver it. He even paid for it!

Wow, you can't beat that. You will enjoy the Wegner Jr. It is a great knife! I think that I like the big brother better for real work, but the Jr. is a great EDC!
Enjoy it,
MAtt

Matt,

This is what I was thinking. For serious, planned cutting tasks I'll reach for (and carry) the large Wegner, but for everyday carry; particularly at work this knife should do a good job of spelling off my stainless Rookie.

Jeff,

If I didn't know better I would think you were giving me a run for the money on my title of Wegnerholic supreme. ;)

I think you will enjoy the jr. They are nice. I really cant wait till the Ocelot hits the streets.

Dennis,

I am a lowly disciple; that is all.

After owning several other Spydies that I really like, I must say I haven't been quite so impressed with a design until now. These knives just seem to fit so well into so many different situations, and feel so very natural to me during use.

Long live the Wegner design, in one form or another! I am also looking forward to the release of the Ocelot, it looks great.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.

I carry the Wegner Jr every day... I have removed the clip to make it a more pocketable" - "pocket knife", beveled the edges of the back and broke the edges of the all-important hole. Roughed the broken edges of the hole for a little more purchase on opening.

My Wegner Jr has a backup and the backup has a backup and the backup, backup has just one more backup... with four in the stable am I a wegner nut? (don't answer that).

I am lacking a full sized Wegner plain edge to complete the stable for both sizes.... soon, soon.

JustChuck,

Obviously, you really like the Wegner Jr. I am glad to read this. Are yours the plain edge versions? Sure am looking forward to receiving mine.

I carry plain edge but have (one) serrated in the display cabinet. I just find plain edge simpler to sharpen on a clamp-on sharpener such as Lansky or DMT.

I really find the Wegner Jr. to be perfect size for either a business suit or kakis/jeans. I just have to keep up with one knife.

The ATS-34 has proven to be a very good steel in terms of edge holding but, unlike my Crucible Powered Metal knives like the starmate and Military, it is not too difficult to sharpen.

I am thinking about learning about "filework" and trying to do the back edge of the Jr. I usually brush up the back (flat - not concave) part of the blade with 400 grit emery paper. Then the kife has a satin finish on the upper flat part near the hole and a shinier finish on the concave section near the edge.

I have a number of "clip-on" knives but for EDC, I vastly prefer just having the knife (sans clip) in my pocket.

Thanks for your interest in my comments... as you can see I am far too interested in this topic to profess really good mental health.

As usual, I am always a step behind Dennis bragging about the Wegner. I am glad that I had a backup NIB since this one is discontinued. The best knife Spyderco has ever made in my opinion, and I love all of them.

JustChuck, RattlerXX...

I too am quite enamoured with the Wegner designs. JC, I may find that I wish to go "clipless" with the Jr. as well. It must be quite a small knife I would think, for you to find it comfortable "down" in your pocket. You see, I have only seen pictures of it so far next to the large Wegner. I think I have an idea of it's size, but perhpas it is smaller than I suspect. In any case, I am going to love it.

The Wegner Jr. I a little bigger that the Walker lightweight but, it is a LOT MORE KNIFE. The G10 makes the slabs nice and light and the ATS-34 blade is very sturdy with a strong back spine.

The Wegner Jr., is as big as I would want to carry in a business suit and as small a knife as I would wish to have if I were stuck out somewhere with just one knife. Somthing that couldn't be said about the Walker lightweight... ever with the clip ground off, it proved to be well... too lightweight.

Another thing I like about the Wegner Jr. is, with a street price of about $80... if I loose it, it is not the end of the world. It is not so expensive as to be more "show than go".

After all this discussion and the recent reviews in Blade Magazine of the Wegner Sr. being one of the top sellers and "best values"... I wish Sal wouldn't drop it from the line-up. Looks like the Ocelot is a Wegner with footprints on the sides... maybe it has a different steel?

Except that they have been discontinued and are getting harder to find :(

Me too. :( Keep an eye out for the upcoming Impala though.

The Ocelot also has the compression lock. Here is a picture for comparison:
