Yahoo! :D Here is my Western W49 Bowie...

About ten years or so ago I just had to have one of these. I bought this one new. It is about the most useless knife I own. It is just too big to carry or really use. But I still think it is cool. There is just something about holding that massive piece of steel. :D Maybe I should seek therapy... :o

Ive got a couple myself. One is the current camillus made one, the other was one of the ones made when coleman owned western back in the 80's. The old one I have I use to use for camping, hiking, clear cutting. It cut many a 2-5" tree!!! The only thing that ever wore out was the sheath!!!!

I am looking for information of where I can purchase a two set of Bowie Original's hunting knives . I had a set I bought 35 years ago and just recently lost them on a hunting trip ! Any information would be greatly appreciated !

Always enjoy your pics, CapCase, and the tailgate of yer pickup makes a dandy background.

I don't have one of these, kinda wish I did. Yep, just about worthless, like the big Buck Frontiersman (model 124) I do have. I think this Camillus is the one that is sold either with a sheath or a wooden plaque to wall hang it on?

The w49 has always been a well built knife. Unfortunately they are 420 now, but they use to be a better product, but to be honest they are just as useful......you just have to have a use for one ;)

I still think that's the nicest looking Bowie knife that I've ever seen.

I got mine in 1985. I couldn't afford the $85 or so it cost, so I waited until I was sent TDY (in the Army) to Europe, and ordered it from the overseas AAFES catalog. I lived in Colorado Springs, it was made in Boulder, CO, and I had to go to Europe to get the best deal. :D Sounds like a punch line on the Tonight Show....

Got it for $35....

I bought mine in 1977 at K-Mart, for $30. Used it as a "brush-cutter" around the homestead, carried it in the woods to clear brush around my deer stands, and just beat the heck out of it. Then, I took a job that required travel via air, and to non-firearm-friendly states. I cleaned the ol' girl up, honed the false edge nice & sharp, made sure the primary edge was hair-popping keen, and packed it in my checked luggage. Sure was comforting in some of the motel rooms I've occupied!

So, I dunno that it's all that useless . . .

A friend of mine gave me one of these new back around 1980 or so. I think that he had it for a few years and had never used it.

I thought that the handle and the sheath could be improved, so I reshaped the handle to where it really felt good, finished it with linseed oil, and then made a nice sheath out of thick leather. Gave it back to him for Christmas a year or two later.

I remember thinking that this would come in real handy if a couple of big dogs attacked while I had it.

What type of steel were these things made of back then?

The thing I like best about the big Western Bowies is the sheath. When I used to make 1:6 scale knife sheaths for GI Joes and similar dol...er...action figures, I copied the sheath's hanger design.

The old ones were carbon steel and hold a edge better is all. Stainless is fine now days. Mine is an old Western, before coleman.

I've got one of the old, "Western" versions, mint in the original, somewhat tattered box, that I would let go for a reasonable price. If anyone's interested, send me an email. This one still has the old form that you could send in and purchase the wooden wall plaque, not that it's any good, now. BTW, it looks exactly like the one in the original post.

:D

As Crocodile Dundee would say, "Now that's a knife"!

By the way, the sickness just gets worse. No therapy can help.
