I have an old unfinished, raw wood, fifth of whusky display box (Alberta Springs Canadian) with a full-length sliding wood 'door' section as one of the sides, tongue and groove fitment to slide open or off the main box entirely, which itself measures a rectangular 11.25" x 4" x 4".
The lid/door is appx. 3/8" thick (same as the other 3 sides) x the 11.25" length.
I cut my long-used loose belt strop in half and trimmed it into two 11" x 1.5" lengths and nuclear glued them, roughout side up, the length of the box door, aligned to the outer edges of it. This leaves about a three-quarter inch gap between the two strops as they lay on the box.
Then I rolled the glued leather strips nice and flat with a dowel and "clamped" it with two concrete blocks on a flat cement floor overnight.
All of my sharpening and knife maintenance stuff-- stones large and small, compound packs, Tough Cloth, tools, torx, files, oils, etc.--fit nicely in the box with a little room to spare. With the top (now a double strop) slid into place everything is secure and in one place. The box will stand up vertically or on it's backside, as when using the strops. Totally portable too.
Finished, it holds both strops very securely 4" above table level (perfect working height for me) or, with the sliding top able to be removed completely from the box, holds both strops flat on a table with a sold 3/8" base when I want to do bench level work. I'll keep one strop loaded and leave one virgin leather.
Basically a handy knife shoe-shine box.
Just sayin'........
