I have a Wicked Edge Sharpener...I don't like using it much as it was a gift and I only use it to re-profile a new edge on a knife that basically comes messed up new from a factory made usually in the far east!! This was the case in a made in taiwan Cold Steel knife I purchased for a relative bargain. Instead of sending it back I decided to grind the bevel right because it came with one bevel on one side at about 30 degrees and the other bevel on the other side was about 18-20 degrees. I decided I would put a 15 degree bevel on each side as a secondary edge and then put a 19 degree tertiary edge on the main edge so it will be easily resharpened on my Spyderco Sharpmaker later in life.

While using the sharpener the abrasive slipped off in such a way that it went flying up and I tried to correct it and over corrected it by twisting it trying to not lose it. Well that twisting motion was just enough to cut my pinky finger at the top corner right through the skin and nail when it came down on the blade's edge. I was very unhappy I could not stop the bleeding and had to go to the Emergency room to get a synthetic pad placed on the top of my new fresh cut skin avulsion. I hope the Wicked Edge guys put some sort of stop pin or hand guard on it's "mouse trap" to keep your fingers safer if it twistes the wrong way by mistake. It is dangerous and I hope you guys are careful. I am not blaming the Wicked Edge company or anything as it was an accident, but I think they can design future products safer next time around or issue a recall to send out hand guard attachments to the diamond stones. Needless to say I will not be using it much anymore.

You bet your ass it did!
...What hurt more was the iodine I put on it to nuke any bacteria. In a situation like that...Iodine will kill everything. Pressure and elevation too and some steril bandages and a paper towel.

IODINE!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weak sauce... it only tingles!

I'd say screw on a couple tiny pipe clamps, I think I've seen some very small worm drive ones that would probably fit easily, adda strip of paper or cellophane and it wont mar the surface of the guide.

Easily removable, reusable and budget friendly!

I did the exact same thing with my mora minus the wicked edge, cut the whole pad and the top of my nail off. I feel your pain, I should have gone to the er instead I wrapped it in tape, and tried to sleep it off lol didn't work so well . The other terrifying thing I found with the wicked edge was that after sharpening Is done, when removing the knife the first few times the weight of the handle made the knife slide out of the vise and into my lap. Nothing gets the heart beating like a razor Sharp sebenza falling on your crotch. I learned that lesson quick. Love the wicked edge, awesome tool. Don't give up on it. Hope your finger heals up. When the pad grows back its gonna feel weird touching stuff for a while. Lol

I assume you have reported this event to Wicked Edge. You really should, even if you think it's an accident.

Exactly. Grown men have been known to cry when iodine is poured on their wounds. Chuck norris would flinch.

Ha! We asked for iodine at my house. The alternative was merthiolate. We called it methialade because we are hicks but right or wrong it made no difference when that bottle of lava was brought out. That little bottle made us REALLY evaluate our injuries before we went to mom. lol

iodine is supposed to sting? After the 2nd (emergency) surgery on my busted finger and 4 days in the hospital I had to soak my hand in Iodine every 6 hours before packing the incisions with gauze. I did this 4 times a day for about 3 weeks.

Yes I did they said Sorry and they will send me a new Machine for another problem I had since it was not staying put at the preset angles and loosened up. The new ones have taps to screw into so it won't come lose and maintain the angle.

Chris Pierce- When I had to have surgery for my broken arm I had to do the same thing, couldn't feel it because my nerve endings were screwed up. Shallow wounds it effing hurts.
dogwood dan- You're probably right. :D
pokesalad- yeah that stuff's worse... That would kill me.

I wrote this post a while back so since we are chatting about slicing ourselves up I thought I'd toss it in. (Oh by the way I did not use IODINE!!!!!aaaaahhhh.) I had to cut myself on purpose.:grumpy: A few months ago I was out fishing by myself. I had a very sharp hook being held in one of the eyelets of the rod and it was way to tight, as a matter of fact the tip of the rod was bent so I knew it was wrong. (duh). I took the hook out of the eyelet with one hand and it slipped and shot forward into my other hand. To be exact, into the finger tip of my middle finger on my left hand. Well it went to the bone. I had to get that thing out of my finger so I got the sharpest knife out of the box and very slowly and carefully cut down into my finger so I could get the hook out. It took me about an hour to slowly cut down into my finger. As soon as I could I then had to clean that mess out and butterfly it up. Yes I know it needed stitches and I was dumb as a board but I was out of work, didn't have any dough, had been hit by 3 hurricanes in a couple of years -- well the resources just were not there for an extra doctors appointment. A few months after that I did go to the doctor for a 1 yr check up and showed him the finger and the story, and really caught hell from him. He said i could have cut a tendon and really done some damage to my finger. So if ya cut yourself really bad it is probably best not to play surgeon like I did and go to the doctor. Oh yea and don't keep so much tension on your fishing line. Jeez that hurt.

After reading you're post I'd be shocked if there isn't at least 3 Lawyers beating you're door down at this very moment.:)

While we are on the subject... Yesterday I sliced myself with a Case small caliber lockback, while touching up the edge. It slipped off of my stone (it woulda been hilarious if itd been a wicked edge) and cut into my right index finger. Pad of the tip. I didn't think it'd cut me, as it wasn't bleeding, and didn't hurt. Then I pulled the flesh to make certain I hadn't cut myself, and a little blood ebbed out. I felt NO pain, and once I let off the prodding, it didn't bleed, so I slapped a bandaid on it and called it good. Bandaid has since come off, the cut is already half healed, and I can personally attest that Case's tru sharp "surgical" stainless actually has the surgical potential they boast about.

BTW- It was a decent cut, too. Appx. a millimeter deep now, deeper yesterday.

Got a picture of what the issue is ? I have a hard time visualizing what the failure mode is from your description.

I don't understand what happened. The diamond stone slipped off of the guide rod and you twisted your hand? It sounds like you were going too fast or pushing too hard or something along those lines.

Quote from my dad. "What is the problem there son? It only has one moving part and that is you!"
