So my wife just told me that she's buying me a custom folder for my B-day...

She told me to make her a list of knives that i want. My budget is $400

This is so bloody exciting!!! So i'd like to have some feedback from the experts.

I know a few things that i definitely want.

1. Must be a flipper
2. 3.5"-4" blade

That's all i'm sure of. Here are a few i'm considering, and why

WDZ Azriel... i LOVE the blade shape
Hinderer XM-24... cause everyone says hinderer is the best

are there any others i should be considering? I have a feeling this will be my go to knife for everything, so i don't want to make a mistake

You might want to slow down there.
There is no way you'll find a Hinderer XM-24 for $400.
It's doubtful you'll even find a WDZ Azriel for that.

Honestly with what you're looking for, I'd just go for a ZT 0560/0561.

Or take a look at the custom/semi custom by dealers for sale.
Also look at the customs from individuals here on the forums.

For sure look in the custom section on this forum, chris reeves has some amazing knives. You dont need to get a sebenza like most, just I know he makes top quality knives so you should look their. Although the brands you named, I dont know much about other then the fact, they are high quality.

on the WZD forum, the base price of an azriel is stated at $250

it looks like i have severely underestimated the cost of an XM-24...

i love the ZT knives, so it's a consideration, but i'm looking for other options as well

Jake Hoback makes a sweet custom folder. I have a limited edition A15 on order. Shoot him an email. Les George VECP is around $450-$500, but the waiting list is long and it's not a flipper. He does make a Cerberus which is a flipper but above your price range, and again a waiting list.

Check out Kirby Lambert's "snap flipper" I think it's just what you need. It may be a little over 400, depending on materials chosen, but not too much. I've got one on order myself. Mine is a flipper w LSCF bolsters and ironwood overlays. Can't wait to get it in!

Take a look at Les Voorhies's knives. He makes some very nice flippers in the $400-$500 range. Another knife you might consider is a Lionsteel SR-1 for around $400, or the damascus bladed model's for around $475. I realize I'm going above the $400 mark on some of these suggestions, and you may need to raise the budget to $500. Something else to look at is the knives by Ray Laconico here at BF. He is making some of the cleanest looking folders around!!

no kidding. As a wedding present, she bought me a Glock 22.... unexpected much

all i gave her was a stupid diamond ring :P

I have an Azrael and the price for what you're getting is fantastic. You won't see them pop up on the exchange much so you may have to get on a list with him, if he's doing a list right now. A lot of custom makers are concentrating on knives for Blade right now so you may have to wait.

So far, the front runner is the Zermeno Azrael... in particular something like this

There are so MANY awesome flippers out there... this is going to be a fun decision.

Just found a really cool Warren Thomas custom.
I'm sending you the link through a visitor message.

You'll have to add around $95... But it's so worth it.

Well, my favorites in your price range would include anything by Darrel Ralph (although you won't be able to afford a full blown custom of his) for sure, particularly the Gun Hammer. My third one of those is coming soon. That ZT 560 that got mentioned would be a good choice. Also, have you seen Peter R's work? I seriously love his knives. He usually does big folders. A smaller one might be a good challenge for him :)

Bladechick, I agree that that Thomas folder is awesome, but i think that for my EDC general purpose knife, i'd probably stay away from a recurve.

I really like it as a defensive design, but it doesn't quite fit the blade shape i'm looking for.

CF: I haven't ever looked at Peter R's work, but i'm doing so now :) thanks for the heads up

Go home to your wife tonight, give her chocolate and roses. Make her a romantic dinner and watch a movie of her choice.

You are the luckiest man alive.
