My Winter Gear List for 2010

I am prepping for some winter woods training in Ontario, Canada. Since I’ve got all my gear laid out, I thought I’d take some pics for you guys. There are a few things missing… like pocket items and last minute grab-n-go stuff but here is the core of my equipment, anyway. I am in no way suggesting what you should bring… just telling you what I use.

Pack (US Alice Medium… I know some folks hate em, but they are one of the most versatile packs out there, IMO) This is my base camp kit. Once established, this pack(and food pouch, below) stays at camp. It’s the shoulder bag from then on out. I also pack my anorak and mitts into this pack but pull them out when I leave camp.

Second Row: Coleman stove, Zebra headlamp, cordage, extra base layer.
Third Row: Nalgene with coffee can billy, Tinder bag (jute, cotton, fatwood, char, steel wool, candles, magbar, lighter.), Pink poodle named “violet”, Thermos.
Forth Row: Spetsnaz Shovel, Trailblazer folding bucksaw

Notice the paracord wrapped supports and the inner tube sections on the straps. ...

Food Pouch (attaches to the side of the Alice Pack) This holds food for 3days or so. I can be stretch out WAY longer if need be…. But I like living “high on the hog”.

That’s it for now.
Thanks,

Later.

That is very cool Rick. Your threads are go to immediately
How many days out?

Good to see someone else with use for the spetnaz shovel. I love mine and have given 4 away to appreciative buddies.
EDC for a vehicle for sure. I have cleared, limbed and chopped firewood as well as shovel duties. Use one for work landscaping in tight spaces.
Very underrated piece of gear for cheap and SOOOO cool to throw.

BTW do you bring extra fuel for the coleman? I have the older green one without the legs and is their a big difference in performance with the new one?

MMMM fried spam, takes me back to boyscout camp, can't get the wife to eat it though.

Looks like a VERY well thought out set up based on a LOT of experience

Thanks for taking the time to post this Bro!!!

great setup, I like the fact that you carry an average tarp, very practical!!!!! thanks for sharing....

I like the mix of gear from the Garmin to the HBC tobacco tin. Seems like you are ready to go!

PS Nice pink poodle :D

Nice setup Rick. I'd need a far bigger pouch than you do to hold 3 days worth of food. :)

I don't see a blanket or sleeping bag. I know you mentioned the anorak...is that all you use besides natural material when you sleep?

That knife and hawk are magnificent! Your blades and leather work always have "the look"--beautiful lines, modern and primitive all at the same time. It's clear that aesthetics come naturally to you—which make it all the more surprising that you carry that ugly blue tarp. :barf:

You can buy those same tarps in camo and olive drab if you look around a bit. :)

Wrapping the frame in paracord.. I think I will do that. Thanks for posting this up, gave me some tips I would have never thought of.

What is the utility of the pink poodle?

To see if we are aware or to keep you warm inside?
