In the mood for a new thread? I was.
I have been recently doing battle.... with who? Sears but that's a different story.
LOVE my XM's !
LOVE my WEPS !
The two together was a little like Wifey #1 when she used to talk to Wifey #2

Unlike the afore mentioned PowWow, this one turned out fine.

One of my new XM's (that did not need sharpening) ended up in the WEPS last night largely due to the fact that I musta left the door to my shop unlocked because in came the wife and there went my relaxation.
Somewhere between hearing about dinner prep and what needed to be gathered for taxes - I decided "Lets sharpen a knife!
Didn't go so well, NOT the knifes fault or the WEPS, I musta been distracted or a failed suicide attempt (I dunno)
Anyway, my bevels were at 22* and 25* respectively (left vs right) no matter the knife was screaming sharp and that variance is imperceptable to naked eye (he said naked).
So, I decided on 25* for reasons obvious at the time.
Knife ended up DULLER than my mind after hearing about my next project I was going to love doing, painting the toilet or the bathroom or something.
Didn't sleep. Could not get my botched sharpening job off my addled mind.
Woke up.
Thought about staying home to sharpen my knife. Showered and went to work (good boy)
Came home and did what?
Ding Ding! You are CORRECT, went straight to my shop to remedy the situation after careful contemplation.
Damn! Same result. What was wrong? Had I lost my mind from the night before, can women really cause you to become retarded? Excuse me, Mentally Challenged.
Turns out, Hinderers don't like strops.
No shizzle.
In my case maybe just my knife. STOP at 1000 grit and she is as sharp as I used to be before I got married.
So, Happy ending and it didn't even cost me an extra $5.
Ooops! I hear her coming, gotta go.

Uhm…if she (an XM) ever gets too far out of whack give me a hollar. I have a Kalamazoo 1SM that…never mind. I doubt you will ever need a reprofile via motorized belts. And if you do, you would contact Rob or Rick.
As for lady stuff, I cannot assist and have no comment. Being single has all the female drama I can handle.

But think what you're missing. Being married makes the inevitable end so much more tolerable. I see somebody walking through a field wearing a hooded jacket and carrying a scythe I stop and yell," Are you looking for me!?
Usually it's just a now curious Farmer...

Just kidding about all this stuff of course;) but not about leaving the XM edge toothy, it just seems to like it better at least mine.
I might mention, it is a spanto. Mileage may vary on a slicer.

Rubi, always love your posts.

I have my WEPS stones up to 1000 and I was planning on getting the next one finer but now I may save my money. Good results are had with my 1000 stones and then 4 strokes per side with green paste on a leather strop.

Unfortunately, strop or no strop is the easy part but the wife drama... At least you have a shop you can hide in.

Yeah Man, 1000 on the Hinderer really sets it up nice. As far as the basement goes, all part of my grand scheme.

I'm gonna build a sub-terranian evil lair like 30 stories below. All she'll hear is a "whoosh" from my escape elevator pod when I detect approaching footsteps.
Construction will have to wait, I was trying to get those friggin' interlocking rubber mats up off the floor and pulled a muscle:D

Why not go to 15 or 18 instead of 25? I only go that thick on choppersl. If you can't thin out these high end steels then what's the point..

I go slow. Often times staying with the original bevel until such time I decide what to do with that particular knife.
Can't put material back on once removed.
The knife is shaving and newsprint cutting sharp at 25*.
I may take it to 22* at some point but no rush.

I'm glad to hear you're happy with the results. I can't help but wonder why you wouldn't lay the 25° side back to 22°??

Doing that evens the height of the bevel (one side is higher than the other now) and give you a much better blade geometry - which also means a sharper edge.

I guess I misread, I thought it came out dull. If it's shaving sharp at 25 then great because it's strong too. I like to thin mine out so when idiots handle it they end up cutting their fingers to pieces.:devilish:

I hear ya, that was sort of my thought. I have FFG blades at 15* that will whittle hair. I just didn't see the need to have an XM with that edge profile. I was surprised it was 25* but is just because I was expecting 20-22.
I'll try to take a pic and see if it shows up at all.

Some say without a Pic, it didn't happen so.....:)

Re-profiled to 22* per/side last night. WEPS (for me) not fast but being as I enjoy the process, that's ok with me. Based on my further research, 20*-22* is considered "normal" for the edge geometry.
Knife is sharper, whether that is attributable to the bevel angle or just better effort - I dunno.
I do know (as previously stated) this knife/this steel likes a toothy edge. No doubt about that.
I went up through the strops and it was better when I went back and left the edge a result of anywhere between 400-1000 grit. Meaning, 400 was great and it stayed sharp with 600/800/1000. After that, not so much.

My 18 3.5 is loving its 22/ side at a 800 w/ couple strokes at 1K on the WEPS.

Yeah. It really does seem to be the magic set-up for the XM. Slices through paper like a scalpel which I think for a beefy blade like a Spanto - is saying something.
