Mycarta, tips and tricks?

I know a lot of you frown on making your own mycarta. But I've been quite successful with it and produced some nice stuff. But I know there's always improvements to be made. I'll go through what I do and you guys can weigh in. I use burlap coffee bags that I got from menards. They are the ones with really big threads. I've yet to use any regular burlap, it's awful boring. I use bondo fiberglass resin and don't use the exact amount of hardener. I work fast and lay it on the sun to cure.
I cut my burlap the same size, or the best I can get.
Make somewhere between 12-15 pieces. I've found 12 is the minimum or it's too thin.
Once I'm ready I lay down a large sheet of wax paper. That's important. I wear two pairs of gloves.
Lay down a layer then smear some resin on. Repeat. When done I place in my jig and clamp it till my clamps don't go anymore.

Now, I'm curious if anyone has any tips or tricks or examples of cool things to try. I've not tried dying the resin, I kind of like the dirty look of the resin as is.
I cut up some last night and dyed it antique golden maple with some alcohol wood dye. Hopefully it comes out good.

I think it looks good...I've been using t shirts from goodwill to make mine.. I wish I had any good tips but I'm new to it myself

I did a tutorial on my way of doing 'Mycarta' handles: http://www.britishblades.com/forums/content.php?189-Micarta-Scales-My-Way

I wrote and posted this tutorial a while back now and as far as I know, nobody else has tried it yet. It would make my day if someone did :)

The basic method is to press/mould the micarta directly onto your knife. It is not difficult and it opens up a whole range of new possibilities.

Here are a few examples of what you can do:

Mike, I'm not much into micarta, but what you are doing looks great.

I have thought of doing this with integrals many times, good to see someone actually make it happen

I will try this on one I'm working on now. It's an integral. I'll have to work out how to do it. Because it's round stock with a stick tang. Any ideas? Know of any way to press for the micarta in a circle for like a D handle?

Can we have some pictures? I am not sure what you are trying to do.

Viral, have you seen the Mycarta Wrap Knife that CrashbladeKnives does on Youtube? Not sure if it is the answer you seek or not.

Good luck
Chris

Mike that is really cool. I've never seen that before and it definitely opens up a new world of possibilities.
