Yesterday i found a very old axe head in my backyard, it looks to be of a "boys axe" size and the only discernible markings i can find is "A20" does anyone know anything about this? I would really like to know because im going to be buying a new handle for it and would liek to know if its worth it. oh and btw im new here so hi.

I've seen a number of true temper heads that had various similar numbers stamped in them (A45 for example); I can't say what they denote, but they seem to be mostly newer heads and also all bear the True Temper mark. Perhaps this is one of those era? If it's not cleaned up you may have luck finding more markings after that.

ill work on cleaning it up on a 6 in wire wheel tomorrow, remember idid JUSt find it so it is obviously still pretty rusty, but it is just surface rust, can wipe it off with almost my thumb, but its still there, but thanks for the info and ill be sure to look

Unless it is ground away to nothing, or has a cracked eye, any axe head is worthy of a new handle

ok well i cleaned up the axe head with a 6 in'' wire wheel in a dewalt drill, still took off all of the surface rust and gave it a low shine that comes when you knock the rust off of something, its not like a silver shine like you would normally think of when you thing of polished steel but its more or less like a black lustery shine. still havent found a makers mark but i have rehandled it. it turns out i picked the wrong handle for the job though, i picked a 36 in handle because im a pretty tall kid and dont want that axe in my leg but i should have gotten a 28 inch because its a boys axe head. ive refined the edge to where it kinda cuts paper, if you run the length of the edge down a piece of paper it'll cut in about an inch and a half, so not enough to shave you, but still sharp. pretty good considering theres still some nicks in the edge that i need to sand off.
