So I was looking over some of my knives the other day and I found a couple have mysterious chips/nicks in the edge!!! I have no clue as to how they got there. It is really aggravating and confusing. The chips are tiny, but large enough to see if I hold it in the right light. I can even feel them when I'm cutting paper. Does anyone else suffer from this anomaly or am I just slowly sinking into knife induced insanity?

Sounds like normal edge damage after a certain amount of use.

I wonder if maybe you have exposed an extra hard particle in your sharpening stone or if a tiny build-up of steel has gotten lodged in your hone. All it takes is a tiny "flaw" in a stone or hone to damage the edge of a knife. And those flaws can be almost impossible to detect.

I had some mysterious nicks in my knives before. turned out someone used my precious babies as a prying tool to open a tin can. make sure you keep your knives in a safe place.

When you sharpen, what progression of grits do you use. I've seen that from going from say 120 grit up to 1200-1500 grit. Then use on something hard like wood, certain types cardboard etc. That's what has caused most of the the mini chipping I've had. That, and those damn super hard blister packs that get so sharp they can cut your hands if you're not careful.

it is a Woods bladeworks TiTan custom folder. The steel is 3V.

That knife is open (pillar) construction, yes?

There are hard objects (other knives, keys, anything?) slamming into the edge when the knife is closed. This happens on a LOT of knives where the edge sits deep in the handle. Happens to all of My CRKs.

^^^ This. I've had loose change get wedged beside different folder blades as well as right on the edge when dropped in pocket. Caused me to change my carrying habits for sure. :foot:

That should be fine for 3V. Did you leave it at a really coarse finish?
I keep it stropped. to a nice smooth finish

I think that has to be what happened. either that or..... when I went to see my buddy off before he heads to fort Jackson for Basic training, I let his older brother handle it. I took my eyes off of him and the knife for about 10 seconds. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to cut something any sane knife person would never dare to cut... oh well. I guess it is a mystery
