I have a friend who works for the railroad he's my proxy scavenger :)
He got me some clay that is used for a sort of cad welding process. For welding 2 sections of rail togethr they make a mold from this clay then they make a pot on top,put in filler metal top with magnesium and viola! melted metal joins the rails.(I'm itching to get my hands on the magnesium)

Will this clay work for clay coating blades? or a patching material for the forge? The color is a dark reddish brown if that helps.

Well, if it'll put up with the heat from the thermit welding (no, I didn't misspell thermite :) ) it can't be all bad! I'd say get some and play with it. It may not have a proper consistancy for clay coating a blade, but it might be handy for other stuff, you never know!

Looking at the thermit website it looks like it may be a refractory sand mold.

That's the stuff!! Thanks D! something else to play around with :)

I worked with a guy who thought thermit welding was fantastic. Since it has such limited application I asked him why ? In WWII on an LST in the middle of the Pacific the deck split open right across the ship !! They repaired it with thermit !!..You could always use it for casting guards or other items.

I saw that thermit on tv being used to weld rails for the cardnails field tracks. It was super cool to see it being done.

Thermit can be used to make steel and there is a fellow over on swordforum that does just that !! Very spectacular !! Add the necessary alloying elements and puff it's steel !
