Can anyone tell me what kind of hatchet this is and what it is used for? Thank you in advance!

I don't think you can learn glean anything from it other then "hatchet". It was abused, but can be brought back. There are threads in this category that give good instruction if you do not know how.

Thank you for the replies. I have two hatchets with the exact same blade pattern. They are too uniform to have been caused by striking anything.
Thanks again...

I have seen a couple of hatchets like that ,kinda, on e*bey but the teeth or wavy edge was not so worn down as the one you are showing.

I think they are some kind of emergency hatchet for cutting through metal roofing or siding or what ever else you may need to get through.

The ones I have seen had a longer point or bit or whatever the heck you wold called a part of the top edge of the blade that stuck out a half an inch or so.

I want to buy one for my collection but at the time I had other thing I needed to purchase.

In the photo it looks chipped up, that is how I and others saw it. If there is a pattern to edge then there would be a specific intent. Although I have not seen such a hatchet, so no additional input.

Here are the two hatchets, one has been sharpened with a file and a new whetstone I wanted to try out:

I am no expert by any means, but any hatchet or axe that had a red head was uesed on a firetruck.

Or they painted it red at the factory. Engines usually carry a 6 pound fire axe not a 1 pound hatchet, though anything's possible. I'd side with those who say it's someone's personal modification but I can't guess what for.

Those axe/hatchets posted in the pics are emergency crew axes. These have the weird looking bits on them I am told for "multiple application use", such as metal, osb, etc. This is what I found, I am not the ultimate source. But sort of makes sense.
