Years ago I bought from Atlanta Cutlery what were described as "German sword blanks from the turn of the century." They are 2x1/8x36 and have a lot of surface pitting. Many moves later I finally have a shop (on the beach!!!!!) where I can do some big and messy projects so no more carburettor rebuilds on the kitchen table!
I want to use these blanks for knife blades but without knowing what sort of steel they're made from I don't know how to proceed with heat treatment. I contacted Atlanta Cutlery but the purchase was so long ago no one there remembers anything about these blanks. They spark pretty good on the grinder and it takes a bit of effort with a file to cut through the surface. Any ideas?
Also, thanks to everyone who answered my questions about bronze blades and belt grinders. This is a great site and I ex-
pect to use it often.
