Here it is guys. The answer from the guy I bought the odd 124 from sent me this message.

"Dear plumberdv,
Hello Dave, You have a unique # 124. The knife came to me as just a vintage blade, no ricasso, scales or butt cap. I asked Joe Houser at Buck if he could help me out...I had the blade and a pair of micarta scales. I sent it in to Joe, and after much effort by Joe and his craftsmen, the knife you now own was the result. The reassembly of the vintage 124 took quite some time...and I believe it to be basically one of a kind, and selling it was hard for me to do, but economic times dictated otherwise. I hope this helps, and that you enjoy the knife, it is a dandy."

Thank you Dave for going the extra mile on this . The information is good and we appreciate it . DM

That is a heck of a find if the story is true. Any thoughts about selling it back to the guy when he gets back on his feet? That is a blade that can never be replaced.

Seller is a wheeler dealer and has been selling Buck's for awhile. Telling the story would have been a double edge sword IMO. Some people will think the knife more interesting and others will likely discount it as a Non-collectable.

It will be interesting if Joe remembers the project and can verify the story.

I sure do remember the knife. We dont usually do that sort of thing, and for good reason. 124's from that vintage were put together with a lot of hand work. As a result, you cant easily take parts from one and expect them to fit on another. I hate saying "no" to forum members and agreed to take on the project. :)
The truth be known, my rework guy, Danny Perretti did the knife. It did take him a few days and several discussion with me to finish it. In fact, at one point, I sent him back to the shop with it. He thought it was done but I pointed out some things I felt should be tinkered with. He is the best at that sort of thing so I felt confident that he could do the job.
I sure hope you like the way it turned out?
