I've been researching for a great all-around bag that's able to fit into settings such as school, day hikes, overnight stays, etc. My primary concerns are that the pack be water-resistant and very durable. From a bit of forum lurking it seems like my search for such a pack has stopped at these two different packs. I have heard a bunch about the MR Sweetpea, and was on the verge of buying it until I noticed the Kata 30 on Arcteryx's site. I like the all-black design in contrast to the bright MR schemes on the Sweetpea, but eh, aesthetics are of secondary importance.

So basically if anyone has experience with both bags, or just the Kata 30, I'd appreciate the input!

I've been wearing a Mystery Ranch Sweetpea for a few years now for school, traveling, and day use. I love the pack! It's very durable as it's made from 500 denier cordura nylon. The fabric itself has a two layer waterproof laminate on the inside and a DWR treatment on the outside. Technically its not waterproof as they don't tape the seam but it will certainly handle a torrential downpour with no problems. MR builds their packs in the USA and also has a lifetime warranty. If anything ever rips, breaks, or tears, just give them a shout and they'll get you squared away.

If you're concerned about color I'd suggest you take a look at the MR Dragonslayer or 3-day Assault. Both packs come in neutral color tones. The body and size is very similar to the Sweetpea with the addition of internal pocketry.

Hope that helps!
