My son who is living in Hawaii (Kauai) sent me a box of pieces of Koa as a Christmas present. It also had two pieces of wood that he couldn't remember the name for.

I might be beefwood, but is supposed to be a native wood.

I am attaching a photo of one piece sanded down to 320 grit. In the next post I will show it oiled.

If anyone has a strong opinion of what it is please let me know. It is very hard and heavy, and has a texture a lotlike lacewood except for the color.

Snakewood or leopard wood? I know that they aren't native to Hawaii, or at least I don't think they are, but I've got some leopardwood and snakewood that look like your piece.

If it's native, you might check with Tom Mayo. He would know if anyone would, wood. Oh. you get the idea. Terry

I would have to say beefwood from Aus.
Do you want to get rid of some of that old junk horn you got laying around.
TJs disposal service could take care of it for you.

It looks like a piece of "laced" sheoak (same thing as fish-tail oak) which is quite available in Oz. "Hairy" oak can look like that too. The pattern looks too sparse to be beefwood. Jason.

I can't believe you guys can't tell what that is!!! It looks just like deer antler to me. Doesn't anybody watch the Outdoor channel??:D

Okay, I'll cast my line and see what I catch...

I'll say that it looks just like the chunk of kingwood I have.

TJ-the elk antler is slowly getting used up. I have a hard enough time finding good antler and hoard it. Those are just the ones that have been cut into and a couple of mule deer strays.

It looks like the wood is she-oak. I thought that was the same thing as beefwood. My son thought the wood was Hawaiian and that sort of threw me off.

mmmm...interesting

Does it taste/smell good?

:D

I like the pattern in the wood - neat stuff. Thanks for sharing.

I think you are on to something there, Roger! It must be elkwood!
